Qur'an 49:3 pertains to the observance of proper etiquette in the presence of Prophet Muhammad (s), emphasizing the profound respect due to him.[1] According to exegetes, the specific designation "Rasul Allah" (Messenger of Allah) within this verse underscores the Prophet's (s) status as the envoy of God; consequently, any disrespect shown to him is tantamount to disrespecting God Himself,[2] an act that may even constitute kufr.[3]
Shi'a exegetes maintain that through this verse, God has tested the hearts of Muslims regarding their reverence for the Prophet (s).[4] Speaking softly in his presence is interpreted as a manifestation of humility[5] and sincerity,[6] virtues that lead to the forgiveness of sins[7] and the attainment of divine reward.[8]
In Majma' al-bayan, Al-Tabrisi narrates that certain individuals would call out to the Prophet (s) with raised voices from behind the doors of his residence, causing him distress.[9] Abd Allah Jawadi Amuli, a prominent Shi'a exegete, notes that these verses instilled such discipline in the Muslims that, when seeking an audience with the Prophet (s), they would gently tap on his door with their fingernails.[10] Furthermore, reports indicate that following the revelation of Qur'an 49:2, the companions spoke so quietly to the Prophet (s) that he was often compelled to ask them to repeat their words.[11]

| “ | Indeed those who lower their voices in the presence of the Apostle of Allah—they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for God-wariness. For them will be forgiveness and a great reward.
