Salūnī qabla an tafqidūnī (Persian: (کتاب) سَلونی قَبلَ أن تَفقِدونی) is a book by Abdullah Jawadi Amuli in Persian, serving as a commentary on Nahj al-balagha. This book follows the method of interpreting Nahj al-balagha by Nahj al-balagha and by the Qur'an. When examining each topic, the author also searches for it in other sermons, letters, and wise sayings, and by referencing related sections, avoids repetition and clarifies the relationship between concepts. As of September 2025, this book has been published in nine volumes.

Introduction

The book Saluni qabla an tafqiduni is the result of twenty-seven years of interpreting and expounding upon Nahj al-balagha by Abdullah Jawadi Amuli, which began in 1992 in the Friday prayer sermons of Qom and continues in his ethics lectures until now (September 2025).[1]

Author's Method

The author's method in explaining Nahj al-balagha is based on interpreting Nahj al-balagha by Nahj al-balagha or by the Qur'an. In this method, when examining a subject in Nahj al-balagha, the author also considers other sermons, letters, and wise sayings of Imam Ali (a) to see if the subject in question has been raised in other parts of Nahj al-balagha as well.[2]

About the Author

Abdullah Jawadi Amuli (b. 1933) is a Shi'a Marja', philosopher, jurist, and a renowned interpreter of the Qur'an and Nahj al-Balaghah, and a teacher at the seminary of Qom.[3] As of November 2025, he has been engaged in teaching Islamic sciences for nearly six decades. Alongside teaching other branches of religious sciences, Jawadi Amuli has paid special attention to the exegesis of the Holy Qur'an and started Qur'an exegesis sessions in 1976, which continues to this day (November 2025).[4]

In addition to teaching various seminary sciences and training students, Jawadi Amuli has authored numerous scientific works in the form of books and articles.[5] Some of these works are dedicated to Nahj al-balagha, including:

  • Dunya-shinasi wa dunya-garayi dar Nahj al-balagha (Understanding of the world and worldliness in Nahj al-balaghah)
  • Qur'an dar Nahj al-balagha (Qur'an in Nahj al-balagha)
  • Wahdat-i jawami' dar Nahj al-balagha (Unity of societies in Nahj al-balagha)
  • Hikmat-i nazari wa 'amali dar Nahj al-balagha (Theoretical and practical wisdom in Nahj al-balagha)

Reason for Naming

The author has derived the name of the book "Saluni qabla an tafqiduni" from a hadith of Imam Ali (a): "Saluni qabla an tafqiduni" (Ask me before you lose me),[6] and chose the title of the book based on it.

In the introduction to the book, it is stated that although such a title is not common among books, this title, which is reminiscent of the high rank and scientific position of Imam Ali (a), has been used to name the book.[7]

The hadith "Saluni qabl an tafqiduni" is narrated as a symbol of knowledge and awareness in Shi'a and Sunni narration sources and is known as one of the miraculous words of Imam Ali (a).[8]

Content and Structure

The book "Saluni qabla an tafqiduni" examines the doctrinal, ethical, social, and political concepts present in the words of Imam Ali (a) with an analytical and argumentative approach centered on the Qur'an and Nahj al-balagha, and explains them for today's audience.[9] As of September 2025, nine volumes of this book have been published, and each volume is dedicated to a set of sermons, divided as follows:

  • Volume 1: Sermons 1 to 15
  • Volume 2: Sermons 16 to 32
