Muḥammad b. al-Rayyān b. al-Ṣalt al-Ashʿarī al-Qummī (Arabic: محمد بن الرَیّان بن الصَلت الاَشعَری القُمی, alive in 254/868) was a prominent Shi'a scholar and narrator of hadiths in the 3rd/9th century. He was a companion of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a).

Birth and Death

The year of Muhammad b. al-Rayyan's birth is not known and is not mentioned by biographers, but on the basis of some evidence it has been speculated that he was born in the early 3rd/9th century.[1] It seems that Muhammad b. al-Rayyan was alive in 254/868 when Imam al-Hadi (a) died, but the year of his death is not known.

Family

His father, al-Rayyan b. al-Salt, was a prominent Shiite narrator of hadiths. Al-Shaykh al-Tusi said about al-Rayyan b. al-Salt that "he was a companion of Imam al-Rida (a) and a reliable, well-known figure".[2] He adds that al-Rayyan was also a companion of Imam al-Hadi (a) and was originally from Baghdad.[3]

Muhammad b. al-Rayyan had a brother, called 'Ali b. al-Rayyan, who was also a Shiite narrator of hadiths.

Reliability

Scholars of 'ilm al-rijal have admired Muhammad b. al-Rayyan and considered him to be reliable.[4] For example, al-Najashi pointed that he authored a book, and in his Khulasat al-aqwal, al-'Allama al-Hilli called him a great, reliable scholar.[5] Muhammad b. al-Rayyan was a companion of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a) and had a close relationship with them. He narrated many hadiths from these two Imams (a) and had many correspondences with them. He narrated some rulings of jurisprudence and other issues from Imam al-Hadi (a).[6] Al-Shaykh al-Tusi and al-'Allama al-Hilli mentioned him as a companion of Imam al-Hadi (a).[7].[8] It is said that he narrated hadiths directly from the Imams (a).

A number of well-known Shiite narrators of hadiths narrated hadiths from Muhammad b. al-Rayyan:

Work

Bibliographers and biographers attributed only one book to Muhammad b. al-Rayyan. Al-Najashi[10] and Agha Buzurg Tihrani[11] attributed to him a book called al-Masa'il (the problems). In his al-Fihrist, al-Shaykh al-Tusi said that “Muhammad b. al-Rayyan and his brother, 'Ali, co-authored a book”.[12]
