Draft:Asl of Zayd al-Narsi
The Asl of Zayd al-Narsi is one of the Four Hundred Original Notebooks of Shi'a Hadith and is attributed to Zayd al-Narsi.[1] This notebook contains between 38 and 51 narrations on various topics such as Prayer, Zakat, Hajj, Prophethood, and the Wilaya of the Ahl al-Bayt (a).[2] It also contains 19 narrations directly from Imam al-Sadiq (a), 14 narrations from Imam al-Kazim (a), and 18 narrations from the Infallibles (a) via intermediaries,[3] seven of which have been quoted in The Four Books.[4][5]
There is a difference of opinion regarding the validity of the Asl of Zayd al-Narsi. Some, such as al-Shaykh al-Saduq and Ibn al-Walid, believe that the book was fabricated by Muhammad b. Musa al-Hamadani.[6] The reasons of this group include: ambiguity in attribution,[7] the difference between al-Majlisi's version and that of Ibn Abi Umayr,[8] and the conflict of the content of some of its narrations with the Shi'a school. Imam Khomeini also believes that the fact that all narrations of this notebook were not quoted in the Four Books indicates the distrust of hadith experts toward it.[9] He also believes that Mansur b. Hassan al-Abi, who corrected the version of the Asl of Zayd al-Narsi in 374 AH, is an unknown individual and should not be confused with Mansur b. Husayn al-Abi (who is not reliable).[10]
On the other hand, some scholars of rijal, such as Sayyid Abu l-Qasim al-Khoei and Bahr al-Ulum, emphasize the authenticity of the book.[11] al-Majlisi mentioned a version of this book in Biḥār al-anwār that was written by Muhammad b. Hasan al-Qummi in 374 AH and corrected by Mansur b. Hassan al-Abi.[12] Furthermore, Bahr al-Ulum and Wahid al-Behbahani believe that the weakening of Muhammad b. Musa al-Hamadani in rijal books is not definitive, and great Shi'a scholars like al-Shaykh al-Mufid and al-Shaykh al-Tusi have narrated from him.[13]
According to Bahr al-Ulum and Wahid al-Behbahani, this book was famous and valid among the companions of the Ahl al-Bayt (a), and Ibn Abi Umayr, who only narrates from reliable narrators, has narrated it.[14] Also, narrators such as Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Safwani, Ibrahim b. Hashim, and Ali b. Ibrahim al-Qummi narrated this book and did not suggest it was fabricated.[15] Bahr al-Ulum and Wahid al-Behbahani believe that al-Najashi confirmed the validity of Zayd al-Narsi's book, and Ibn al-Ghadairi had also seen a copy of it.[16]
The narration of the reports from the book of Zayd al-Narsi in reliable Shi'a hadith sources such as al-Kāfī, al-Zuhd, Tahdhīb al-aḥkām, Man lā yaḥḍuruh al-faqīh, Kāmil al-ziyārāt, and Thawāb al-aʿmāl is also presented as evidence of its validity. Furthermore, the content of some narrations of this book appeared in 18 other books.[17] al-Tihrani in al-Dharīʿa considered this book to be among the sources of Mustadrak al-wasāʾil.[18]
