Draft:Sermon 143 of Nahj al-Balagha
Template:Infobox narration Sermon 143 of Nahj al-Balagha is a speech by Imam Ali (a) delivered after the Rain Prayer (Istisqa').[1] In this sermon, the Imam (a) advises the people to supplicate to God during times of drought[2] and to seek refuge in His mercy.[3]
From the expression "O God! We have come toward You from the houses where we were..." in this sermon, it is inferred that the Imam (a) performed the Rain Prayer in an open space without a roof.[4] 'Allama al-Majlisi has used this sermon to conclude the recommendation (istihbab) of performing the Rain Prayer under the sky.[5] At the beginning of this sermon, Imam Ali (a) states that the earth and sky are not the origin of provision (rizq); rather, they both obey God in delivering provision to the servants.[6] The Imam (a) further explains that God deprives His servants of blessings in response to their unrighteous deeds.[7]
Ali (a) reminds the people in this sermon that one must strive to be worthy of God's mercy.[8] The Imam (a) states the way to be delivered from this affliction[9] is that God made repentance (tawba) the cause of the abundance of sustenance and mercy upon the creation.[10] Some scholars have noted in their commentaries on this speech that although seeking forgiveness is a cause for God's pardon, there must also be effort for provision.[11]
In a part of this sermon, the Imam (a) mentions that they have come out after hearing the cries of animals and the moaning of children, with hope in God's blessing, and then prays that God satiates them with rain.[12] Ibn Maytham al-Bahrani, one of the commentators of Nahj al-Balagha, describes these sentences of the Imam (a) as "pleasant and touching sentences" whose aim is "expressing eagerness for the descent of mercy and showing hope in the grace and blessing of the Lord."[13]
