Sayyid Murtaḍā Pasandīda (Persian: سیّد مرتضی پسندیده) (b. 1313/1895 d. 1417/1996) was the elder brother of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He studied various subjects of Islamic studies in Isfahan and taught them in his hometown, Khomein.

He took part in political activities before and after the Islamic Revolution of Iran.

His Family

His father, Sayyid Mustafa, and his grandfather, Sayyid Ahmad, were reputable scholars in their regions.

Sayyid Ahamd, son of Sayyid Din Ali Shah Kishmiri, had studied in Iraq and had moved to Khomein at the invitation of its people.

Sayyid Mustafa was born in Khomein. Having finished primary studies, he went to Isfahan and then to Najaf. After his return to Khomein, he was martyred in 1320/1902-3 by the criminals of the region during his fights against them. At this time Sayyid Murtada was 8 years old and Sayyid Ruh Allah was 4 months old. According to this, Sayyid Murtada was -in a sense- responsible for protecting and teaching his little brother, Imam Khomeini.

Teachers

After completing primary studies in Khomein, he studied for about 8 years, in Isfahan, under scholars such as: Shaykh Muhammad Rida Najafi, Mirza Ali Yazdi, Haj Aqa Rahim Arbab and Haj Aqa Sadiq Khatun Abadi.

Then he returned to his hometown and began teaching jurisprudence, principle of jurisprudence, theology and Arabic syntax. His brother (Imam Khomeini) participated in some of these classes.

According to his own saying, in 1923 and 1924, he participated in Ayatollah Sayyid Hasan Mudarris's class, held in Sipahsalar mosque (in Tehran), for some months.

Revolutionary Activities

Before Islamic Revolution in Iran

Before 1963, he was engaged in political and social activities in Khomein and, sometimes, in Tehran. Because of his close relation with Imam Khomeini, he was exposed to threats and political restrictions. In this regard, he was arrested several times and exiled to Khomein, Anarak and Daran (in Isfahan).

His most important activity from 1963 to 1979 was provision and distribution of the salaries of the students in Islamic Seminaries on behalf of Imam Khomeini, and also helping the families of those who were imprisoned or exiled by Muhammad Rida Pahlavi.

After the Islamic Revolution in Iran

After the victory of Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, he was appointed as the representative of Imam Khomeini in religious issues, in Qom.

Interviewed by the magazine "Pasdar Islam", he shared a set of his memories from the time of Rida and Muhammd Rida Pahalvi and also the history of his ancestors. The collection of his memories have been published in the book Khatirat Ayatollah Pasandida (memories of Ayatullah Pasandida).

Demise

Sayyid Murtada Pasandida passed away on Jumada II 30, 1417/November 12, 1996 in Tehran and was buried in the Holy Shrine of Lady Fatima al-Ma'suma (a) in Qom.
