Āftāb dar maṣāf (Persian: آفتاب در مصاف), subtitled ʿIlal wa abʿād-i ḥāditha-yi ʿĀshūrā (Causes and Dimensions of the Incident of Ashura), is the transcribed text of speeches by Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, regarding Imam al-Husayn (a) and the analysis of events related to the Event of Ashura in 61/680. These speeches were delivered from 1978 to 2011.

The book is organized into six chapters covering the personality of Imam al-Husayn (a), the background and goals of his uprising, the companions and enemies of Imam al-Husayn in Karbala, and some supplications and Ziyaras related to him.

This book was first published in 2013 and was reprinted ten times by 2022. The book Dars-hā-yi ʿĀshūrā (Lessons of Ashura) has been extracted and published from this work.

Author

Sayyid Ali Khamini'i is the second leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In his speeches and notes, he has also analyzed history, some of which have been compiled into books, such as A 250 Years Old Person, Pishway-i sadiq (The Truthful Leader), and Du imam-i mujahid (the Two Mujahid Imams).[1]

Following the book Aftab dar masaf, three other books regarding Imam al-Husayn (a) and Ashura have been published from the speeches of Sayyid Ali Khamini'i, titled Chahār guftār (Four Discourses), Dars-hā-yi ʿĀshūrā (Lessons of Ashura), and 72 sukhan-i ʿĀshūrāʾī (72 Ashura Speeches).[2]

Structure and Content

The content of the book Aftab dar masaf is arranged chronologically based on the speeches of Sayyid Ali Khamini'i from 1978 to 2011[3] in six chapters. The summary of the book's contents is as follows:

  1. Generalities: Includes preliminary discussions such as the School of Islam, Islamic teachings, Islamic society, the Prophet of God (s), the Shi'a Imams, and sociological discussions.[4]
  2. Imam al-Husayn (a): Includes topics regarding the birth celebration, the personality of Imam al-Husayn (a), and Husayni lessons.[5]
  3. Ashura: Covers topics such as understanding the Uprising of Imam al-Husayn (a), its background and goals, the methodology of struggles, features of the uprising, the secret of its permanence, duties and requirements, and the distortions of Ashura.[6]
  4. Companions of Ashura: Introduces some prominent figures of the event of Ashura such as Lady Zaynab (a), al-Abbas (a), Ali al-Akbar (a), Muslim b. Aqil, Qasim b. al-Hasan, and 'Abd Allah b. al-Hasan.[7]
  5. Enemies of Ashura: Explains the characteristics of those who paved the ground for and perpetrated the Event of Karbala, such as Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan and Yazid b. Mu'awiya, and describes the features of their era.[8]
  6. Ziyaras and Supplications: Introduces and explains some supplications narrated from Imam al-Husayn (a) or Ziyaras narrated regarding him, such as the Supplication of Arafah, Ziyara Ashura, and Ziyara Arba'in.[9]

Avoiding ambiguity in the text, avoiding the fragmentation of content,[10] and summarizing important points in the margins of the book for easy access are considered features of this book.[11]
