Assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei

The assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei refers to the martyrdom of Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the then-Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which occurred during a joint US-Israeli attack in the early hours of the Ramadan War on February 28, 2026, on the Leader's Residence Complex in Tehran. In this attack, some members of the Iranian leader's family, officials of the Leader's office, and military commanders were also martyred.
Shia maraji' and some Sunni jurists offered condolences and condemned the attack. Some, such as Abdullah Jawadi Amuli and Hussein Nuri Hamedani, also issued fatwas of jihad against the United States and the Israeli regime. A number of political figures from the Islamic world and presidents and prime ministers of various countries, including Russia, Pakistan, Iraq, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, the Indian National Congress, the foreign ministries of China and Lebanon, as well as resistance groups, reacted to the martyrdom of Ayatullah Khamenei and offered their condolences. Mourning ceremonies and protest gatherings were held in various countries, including throughout Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Yemen, Australia, Nigeria, Türkiye, and Kashmir.
Following the assassination of Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Assembly of Experts elected Sayyid Mujtaba Khamenei as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran on March 8, 2026.
Description of the Event
Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the second Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was martyred on the morning of Saturday, 10 Ramadan 1447/ February 28, 2026, in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on the Leader's Residence Complex in Tehran.[1] The US President and the Israeli Prime Minister announced the bombing of the Leader's Residence and the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader on the same day; however, Iran's state television announced his martyrdom at dawn the following day.[2] It is reported that the Leader's Residence was destroyed in these attacks.[3]
The attack on the Leader's Residence was carried out after intelligence was obtained regarding a meeting of the Supreme Leader with senior officials, on Saturday morning at approximately 9:40 AM, with the firing of dozens of missiles, including Sparrow missiles, by 50 Israeli fighter jets.[4] The number of missiles has been reported to range from 30[5] to over 100.[6]
It has been stated that Israeli intelligence agencies, including Unit 8200 and Unit 9900, had been monitoring the Supreme Leader and senior Iranian officials for over two decades, mapping their programs and locations.[7] The US intelligence agency (CIA) also cooperated with Israeli intelligence agencies.[8]
In these attacks, several members of the Iranian leader's family (daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and grandson), some members of his office, and some military commanders, including the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the Minister of Defence, were also martyred.[9]
Political and Religious Crime
Within the framework of international law, the assassination of political leaders of countries is generally considered a violation of the principles of national sovereignty and fundamental rules of international relations. Accordingly, given the religious status of Sayyid Ali Khamenei as the leader of the world's Shia Muslims, this act has been deemed not only a political crime but also a religious crime.[10]
Reasons and Purpose of the Assassination
The Iranian nation knows its Islamic and Shi'a lessons well; it knows what to do. Imam al-Husayn (a) said: "One like me does not pledge allegiance to one like Yazid." The Iranian nation, in fact, says: a nation like us, with this culture, this history, these sublime teachings, will not pledge allegiance to leaders like the corrupt individuals who are in power in America today.[11]
In some reports, the purpose of the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei has been stated as the destruction of Iran and taking full control of it through the assassination of pillars of power such as the Supreme Leader, commanders, and senior decision-makers of Iran,[12] changing the political structure of Iran,[13] reducing internal cohesion, limiting Iran's regional influence, and establishing the dominance of the Zionist regime over the region.[14] The US President stated in remarks that the goal of assassinating Iran's Supreme Leader was justice for Iran and the world, and said that this is the best opportunity for the Iranian people to take back their country.[15]
Other reports have linked this event to disputes related to Iran's nuclear program and have claimed that preventing Iran's nuclear progress was one of the motives for the assassination.[16] This is while Sayyid Ali Khamenei had previously declared the production and use of weapons of mass destruction forbidden,[17] and negotiations between Iran and the US over Iran's nuclear program were underway. Furthermore, the US bombed Iran's nuclear facilities in May–June 2025 and claimed to have destroyed them.[18] In December 2025–January 2026, the US and Israel also organized riots to change the Islamic Republic system, which ended in failure.[19] Before this event, Sayyid Ali Khamenei, in his speeches in response to the threats from the US President, had emphasised his opposition to any negotiation or compromise with the United States. In response to those threats, he had also warned of the possibility that the conflicts could expand to a regional level.[20] In articulating his opposition to compromise, he sometimes drew upon historical and religious concepts and models from Shi'a literature—most notably citing the words of Imam al-Husayn (a) during the Event of Karbala: "One like me does not pledge allegiance to one like Yazid."[21]
Sayyid Ali Khamenei was known as the leader of the Axis of Resistance and supported groups and movements opposed to occupation and Western influence in West Asia.[22]
Threats to Assassinate Iran's Supreme Leader

Before the martyrdom of Iran's Supreme Leader, the US and Israel had repeatedly threatened to assassinate him. For instance, during the Twelve-Day War , the US President, the Prime Minister of the Zionist regime, and the Israeli Minister of War openly threatened to assassinate him,[23] and these threats were met with reactions from Shi'a Maraji', the Seminary of Najaf and Qom, and many Muslim scholars and institutions.[24] In a statement, the Seminary of Najaf stated: "Any aggression against him is considered a declaration of war against the entire Muslim nation and a blatant betrayal of the values of monotheistic civilization."[25] Furthermore, some Maraji', such as Nasir Makarim Shirazi[26] and Nuri Hamedani,[27] had declared any threat or aggression against the Supreme Leader and the Shi'a marja'iyya as tantamount to muhariba (waging war against God).
Reactions
The assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader prompted numerous and varied reactions, with global media extensively covering the event.

Reactions of Maraji'
Following the martyrdom of Iran's Supreme Leader, Maraji' and seminary figures in Qom, Najaf, and other Islamic seminaries around the world issued statements condemning the act. Among those who issued condolences were Sayyid Ali Sistani, Husayn Wahid Khurasani, Nasir Makarim Shirazi, Husayn Nuri Hamedani, Jafar Subhani, Sayyid Musa Shubayri Zanjani, Muhammad Ishaq Fayyad, Yadullah Dozdouzani,[28] Abdullah Jawadi Amuli,[29] Husaynn Mazahiri,[30] Muhammad Ya'qubi,[31] and Sayyid Muhammad Taqi Mudarrisi.[32] Ahmad bin Hamad al-Khalili, the Grand Mufti of Oman, offered condolences for the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, describing him as a steadfast and resilient fighter and a supporter of Palestine, and characterized his loss as a great tragedy.[33]
Declaration of Jihad
Some Shi'a jurists, including Abdullah Jawadi Amuli[34] and Husayn Nuri Hamedani,[35] as well as a number of Sunni scholars,[36] declared jihad against the United States and the Israeli regime. Nuri Hamedani stated that it is obligatory upon all Muslims to avenge the blood of their martyred leader from the perpetrators of this crime.[37] Nasir Makarim Shirazi also described his martyrdom as a prelude to the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (a).[38] The head of the Sunni Scholars Association in Iraq requested that maraji' declare jihad against Israel and the United States.[39]
Reactions of Political and Religious Figures and Movements in the Islamic World
A number of political and religious figures from the Islamic world also reacted to the martyrdom of Sayyid Ali Khamenei and offered their condolences. These included: Iranian political officials such as the heads of the three branches of government,[40] many Pakistani religious and political figures,[41] the head of the Qom Seminaries,[42] Reza Ramezani, Secretary-General of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) World Assembly,[43] Sayyid Ammar Hakim, leader of Iraq's National Wisdom Movement,[44] and Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of Iraq's Sadrist Movement,[45] Naim Qassem, Secretary-General of Hezbollah Lebanon,[46] the President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region,[47] Falih al-Fayyadh, head of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi),[48] the head of the Shia Scholars Council of Afghanistan,[49] and the head of the Religious Administration of Muslims of Russia.[50]
The World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought,[51] Yemen's Supreme Political Council,[52] Iraq's Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq,[53] Indonesia's Council of Ulema,[54] the Sharia Association of Shia Muslims in the Jammu and Kashmir region of India,[55] and regional resistance groups including Hezbollah Lebanon, Yemen's Ansarullah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Shia movements in Iraq issued statements condemning the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader and expressing solidarity with Iran.[56] Some leaders of other religions, including the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, also offered condolences.[57]
Political Officials of Countries
Presidents and prime ministers of various countries, including Russia, Pakistan, Turkey, Iraq, Tajikistan, Cuba, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Malaysia, and the Indian National Congress, as well as the foreign ministers of China,[58] Turkey, Iraq, Oman, and Azerbaijan,[59] the Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon,[60] and the Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization[61] offered condolences for the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader as a clear violation of ethical standards and international law.[62] China also considered it a violation of Iran's sovereignty and security, and a trampling of the principles of the UN Charter and norms of international relations.[63] North Korea described it as an aggressive, illegal act and the worst form of sovereignty violation.[64]
Public Gatherings and Mourning in Various Countries

The Iranian government declared seven days of official public holiday and forty days of public mourning.[65] The Iraqi government also declared three days of public mourning and closed the provinces of Karbala and Najaf for one day.[66] Sayyid Sajid Ali Naqvi, the leader of Pakistan's Shia community, declared 40 days of public mourning in Pakistan,[67] and the Sharia Association of Shia Muslims in Kashmir and Jammu also declared 40 days of public mourning.[68]
The people of Iran held nationwide marches and gatherings to avenge their martyred leader,[69] which continued until the fortieth day and beyond.[70] The people of Pakistan demonstrated in various cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Gilgit, and Skardu, and in some cities attacked the United States embassy, during which US soldiers and security agents opened fire, resulting in the martyrdom of 34 Pakistanis.[71] In Kashmir, public gatherings were met with violence from the police. In Baghdad, protesters attacked the US embassy during demonstrations.[72] Mourning ceremonies and protest gatherings were also held in various countries, including Iraq, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Yemen, Australia, Nigeria, and Türkiye.
At the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, the green flag atop the dome was changed to a black flag as a sign of mourning.[73] Jamkaran Mosque in Qom was also adorned with a red flag bearing the slogan Ya la-Tharat al-Husayn as a symbol of vengeance.[74] Symbolic funeral ceremonies were held at the Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf,[75] the Al-Kadhimiya Shrine,[76] and several other Iraqi cities such as Baghdad.[77] Absentee funeral prayers were also held in Pakistan[78] and Türkiye.[79]
Ayatollah A'rafi's Letter to the Pope
Alireza A'rafi, the head of the Seminaries, in a letter to Pope Leo XIV, described the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader as an unprecedented crime in the history of religions and an obvious insult to all followers of the divine religions. He called on the Pope to condemn this crime and deny any association with the teachings of Christianity. A'rafi noted that Ayatollah Khamenei was a supporter of the rights of religious minorities, particularly Iranian Christians, and that the threats against his life were a result of his defense of the people of Palestine against genocide and occupation.[80]
Production and Release of Artistic Works
On the occasion of the martyrdom of Iran's Supreme Leader, artists, singers, and eulogists produced and released numerous artistic works; including the music video "Clenched Fist" performed by Mehdi Rasuli, "Khamenei Continues Still" by Mahmud Karimi, "Patient Oppressed One" by Hossein Taheri, "Labbaik Ya Shahid" (Here I am, O Martyr) by Abu Zar Ruhi, "My Martyred Leader" by Muhammad Asadullahi, "Martyr Imam" performed by Sayyid Reza Narimani, and "Martyred Leader" by Ghulam Rasul Sufi.[81]
Commemorative Ceremonies on the Arbaeen (40th Day) of the Martyrdom

On April 8–10, 2026, on the occasion of the fortieth day of the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei, ceremonies were held in various cities of Iran,[82] Pakistan,[83] Iraq,[84] and other countries.
Operation True Promise 4
In response to the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei and the initiation of war by the US and the Israeli regime, the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran carried out Operation True Promise 4, conducting missile and drone strikes against targets in the occupied territories and US military bases in the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.[85] The 42nd wave of Operation True Promise 4 was carried out under the code "Labbaik Ya Khamenei" (Here I am, O Khamenei) and dedicated to Iran's martyred Supreme Leader and his family.[86] Iran's IRGC had announced in a statement on the February 29 that it would deliver severe, decisive, and regretful punishment to the killers of the Supreme Leader (the US and Israeli governments).[87] Hezbollah Lebanon also announced in a statement on March 2 that it had entered the battle against Israel to avenge the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei.[88] Resistance groups also confronted the US and Israel in support of Iran.[89]
Slogan of Muharram 1448: Seeking Revenge for the Martyrdom of the Leader
Following the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei and the ensuing call for blood revenge and retribution for his death, the slogan "In the camp of Hussain, we are seekers of revenge and ready to sacrifice our lives" along with the hashtag "We are the avengers" was selected as the common slogan for religious mourning assemblies (Hey'ats) for the month of Muharram in the year 1448/2026. by the Organization of Hey'ats and Religious Associations[90].
Funeral Processions in Iran and Iraq

The funeral ceremonies were held with the extensive participation of the public and officials from Iran and several other countries on July 6 in Tehran, July 7 in Qom, July 8 in Najaf and Karbala, and July 9 in Mashhad[91], and his body was laid to rest in the Imam Reza Holy Shrine (Dar al-Dhikr prayer hall) in the early morning of July 10, 2026 CE[92]. According to reports, a total of between 40 to 43 million people participated in these ceremonies, making it the largest funeral procession in the world[93][94]. Due to wartime conditions and security considerations, his funeral and burial ceremonies were delayed in June-July 2026[95].
Aftermath
The assassination of Iran's leader had several consequences, some of which include:
Formation of the Provisional Leadership Council

Following the announcement of the martyrdom of Sayyid Ali Khamenei, in accordance with Article 111 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Provisional Leadership Council was formed and continued its activities until March 8, 2026 CE, when a new leader was elected. The members of this council included Masoud Pezeshkian (President), Ghulam-Husayn Muhsini-Eje'i (Head of the Judiciary), and Ali Reza Arafi (member of the Guardian Council)[96].
Election of Sayyid Mujtaba Khamenei as the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Following the assassination of the Leader, the Assembly of Experts convened on March 8, 2026 CE and elected Sayyid Mujtaba Khamenei as the third Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Prior to this session, the United States and Israeli regime, intending to prevent the Assembly of Experts from convening and electing a new leader for the Islamic Republic, bombed the Assembly's buildings in Tehran and Qom, resulting in their destruction and the martyrdom of several citizens and Assembly staff[97]. Additionally, the two regimes had threatened the Assembly members and warned against the election of Sayyid Mujtaba Khamenei as the third leader of Iran[98].
Impact on the General Atmosphere of Iranian Society
According to some analysts, this event had significant effects on Iran's domestic atmosphere. These included social cohesion and solidarity, intensification of public hatred towards the United States and Israeli regime, and the strengthening of the Islamic Republic's political discourse[99]. It also intensified domestic anger as well as the anger of Iran's regional and extra-regional allies[100].
Sayyid Ali Khamenei was introduced as the distinguished martyr of the year 2026 CE, and "Labbaik ya Khamenei" (Here I am, O Khamenei) was announced as the slogan of the year 2026 CE for the Rahiyan-i Noor (pilgrimages to former warfronts) program[101].
