Muḥammad b. Ja'far b. Namā (Arabic: محمد بن جعفر بن نَما (born c. 565/1169-70) was one of the best-known scholars of Ibn Nama Family. He studied with teachers such as Ibn Idris al-Hilli, Burhan al-Din Muhammad al-Qazwini, and Ja'far b. Nama. His students include al-Sayyid b. Tawus, 'Abd al-Karim b. Ahmad b. Tawus, Ibn al-'Alqami the vizier, al-Muhaqqiq al-Hilli, and Yusuf b. 'Ali al-Hilli.

Lineage

Abu Ibrahim (Abu Ja'far) Muhammad b. Ja'far b. Muhammad (Hibat Allah) b. Nama, known as Najib al-Din, was one of the best-known scholars of Ibn Nama Family. Details of his life and education are not exactly known. But since he is said to have died at the age of 80, he must have been born in about 565/1169-70.

Teachers

According to chains of transmissions of some hadiths, he transmitted hadiths from prominent figures such as Abu l-Faraj 'Ali b. Sa'id al-Rawandi, Ibn Idris al-Hilli, Muhammad b. Ja'far al-Mashhadi, 'Abd al-Ru'asa Hibat Allah b. Hamid, Burhan al-Din Muhammad al-Qazwini, as well as his father.

Students

Sayyid b. Tawus was a student of Najib al-Din. He had a permission for the transmission of hadiths from Najib al-Din and studied fiqh (jurisprudence) with him.

Other students of his include 'Abd al-Karim b. Ahmad b. Tawus, Ibn al-'Alqami the vizier, al-Muhaqqiq al-Hilli, Yusuf b. 'Ali al-Hilli, Yahya b. Sa'id al-Hilli, and his son, Ja'far b. Muhammad b. Nama al-Hilli.

Writings

According to some sources he had written works, but neither the writings are available to us, nor even their titles.

Death

Ibn Nama died in Dhu l-Hijja 636 or 645 (July 1239 or April 1248) in Hilla and was buried in Karbala.
