SubjectTranslation and Exegesis of the Qur'an

Qur'ān-i ʿAẓīm (The Great Qur'an) is the title of the Persian translation of the Qur'an by Sayyid 'Ali Naqi Fayd al-Islam, which is accompanied by an exegesis of the verses.

Fayd al-Islam's translation is characterized by providing general specifications of each Sura at its beginning, including whether it is Makki or Madani, the number of verses, and the Sura number.[1] It also addresses the occasion of revelation of verses,[2] mentions exegetical points within parentheses,[3] and in some cases, explains the connection between the beginning of the Sura and the preceding Sura.[4] Additionally, the instances and application of verses to the Infallible Imams (a)[5] and the jurisprudential rulings of verses based on the consensus of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) have been considered.[6]

At the end of the Suras, the translator has stated the virtue of reciting them, citing narrations from the Infallible Imams (a).[7] Also, when encountering cultural and social concepts and elements, the translator has tried to fill the informational gap between the text and the reader by adding information to the target text so that the reader can connect with the text, as noted in verses such as Qur'an 5:3 and Qur'an 2:104.[8]

This translation has been praised for providing appropriate equivalents for Qur'anic terms, correctly returning pronouns to their antecedents, and observing accuracy in the literary and syntactic composition of verses.[9] Fayd al-Islam's translation has been introduced as having fewer errors compared to many other translations in terms of accuracy, conformity with the original text, and observance of syntactic points.[10] Among the weaknesses of Fayd al-Islam's translation, the excessive use of synonyms, providing unnecessary explanations, and inappropriate specifications in the general concept of the verse have been mentioned.[11]

The translator has stated that this translation was completed after fourteen years of research in Islamic books, jurisprudence, exegeses, and reliable hadiths.[12] According to him, after completion, the translation of the Qur'an was rewritten in beautiful calligraphy by Mirza Tahir Khushniwis Tabrizi, and then the translator, along with his family, compared the rewritten version with the original text.[13]

Fayd al-Islam's translation of the Qur'an was completed in 1968 and was published in the same year in three volumes with a circulation of thirty thousand.[14] After a good reception of this translation, the print quickly became scarce and was made available to the public again through numerous reprints.[15] This work was also published in 1999 with new typesetting in a circulation of five thousand sets by Faqih Publications in Tehran.[16]

Sayyid 'Ali Naqi Fayd al-Islam (1905-1985) was a cleric, translator of Islamic sciences, and a student of Sayyid Abu l-Hasan Isfahani, Aqa Diya' 'Iraqi, and Muhammad Kazim Shirazi, from whom he received Permission for Ijtihad; he had also received Permission for the Transmission of Hadiths from Ali Akbar Nahawandi and Shaykh 'Abbas Qummi.[17] Among his numerous works, one can mention the translation of Nahj al-balagha, the translation and summary of the exegesis of the Qur'an, the translation and commentary on al-Sahifa Al-Sajjadiyya, and the issue of Raj'a.[18]
