Juzʾ(Arabic: جُزْء) serves as a criterion for dividing sections of the Quran. Each juz' constitutes one-thirtieth of the noble Quran, approximately equivalent to twenty pages featuring Uthman Taha's calligraphy. Further, each juz' is subdivided into four hizbs. The thirtieth juz' holds the highest count of surahs, encompassing thirty-seven in total. Various cultures refer to Quranic juz's either by their numerical order or the word with which each juz' commences.

Juz' represents a Quranic division, with Muslims organizing the Quran into thirty sections or juz's. Various cultures identify Quranic juz's by numerical order or the starting word of each section. For example, 'Amma juz', corresponding to the thirtieth section, commences with "'Amma yatasa'alun".[1] Each juz' contains four hizbs, though in specific Qurans, it may be divided into two hizbs. In Uthman Taha's calligraphy, each juz' comprises twenty pages.[2]

History of Quran's Division

Some scholars maintain that the division of the Quran into juz's originated from a Prophetic hadith, alluding to the recitation of the Quran in each lunar month.[3] However, there are divergent opinions on when this division first began. It is suggested that the practice commenced during the era of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf al-Thaqafi (d. 95/714),[4] with the intent of reciting one juz' daily during the month of Ramadan.[5] Alternatively, others attribute the initiation of this division to Ma'mun al-'Abbasi (reign: 198/813-4 ;218/833 ).[6] Zarkashi, an eighth/fourteenth century Quranic exegete, attributes the prevalence of the thirty juz's division to religious schools.[7]

Recitation of Juz'

In numerous Islamic countries, Muslims collectively recite the entire Quran during the month of Ramadan. Each day of the month is dedicated to reciting one juz' of the Quran. This practice is commonly called the recitation of juz'.[8]

In specific Islamic regions, individual juz's of the Quran are printed separately. Referred to as thirty-part Qurans, these are employed in mourning ceremonies for recitation on behalf of the deceased.[9]
