Sūra al-ʿAṣr (Arabic:سورة العصر, the Time) is 103rd sura of the Qur'an. It is a Makki sura. The name of the sura is adopted from its first verse. In this sura, God swears, "By time that indeed the man is in loss except those who have faith and do righteous deeds, and enjoin one another to [follow] the truth, and enjoin one another to patience."

It is narrated in hadiths that by "those who have faith", those are meant who believe in wilaya of Imam Ali (a). It is transmitted from the Prophet (s) that whoever recites this sura will find his destiny in patience and tolerance; and on the Day of Judgment, he will be resurrected with the companions of the truth.

Introduction

  • Naming

This sura is called "al-'Asr" because in its first verse, God swears by "al-'Asr" [Time]. The other name of this sura is "Wal-'Asr".[1]

  • Order and Place of Revelation

Sura al-'Asr is a Makki sura. It is thirteenth sura revealed to the Prophet (s). It is 103rd sura in the current compilation of Qur'an,[2] located in juz' thirty.

  • Number of Verses and Other Characteristics

Sura al-'Asr has three verses, fourteen words and seventy three letters. Regarding volume, it is among mufassalat suras (having several short verses). Sura al-'Asr begins with a sworn statement.[3]

Content

In this sura, God swears by al-'Asr, and says that "indeed the man is in loss * except those who have faith and do righteous deeds, and enjoin one another to [follow] the truth, and enjoin one another to patience."[4] (103: 2-3)

Shi'a of Imam Ali (a) are Away from Loss

It is mentioned in the third verse that those who have faith are away from loss. It is narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a) that the phrase "except those who have faith" refers to those who have faith in the wilaya of Imam Ali (a).[6] It is mentioned in Sunni sources that this sura is about the virtues of Imam Ali (a).[7]

Merits and Benefits

Sura al-'Asr was so important among the companions of the Prophet (s) that, according to some sources, anytime they met, they would not leave each other unless they recited sura al-'Asr.[8]

It is narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a) that whoever recites Sura al-'Asr in recommended prayers, on the Day of Judgement, God will brighten his face and make him happy and proud until he enters the Paradise.[9]

It is narrated from the Prophet (s) that, whoever recites this sura will find his destiny in patience and tolerance; and on the Day of Judgement, he will be resurrected with the companions of the truth.[10]
