Umm Aswad al-Shaybani (Arabic: أم أسود الشيباني) was the first Shia from the Al A'yan family and is considered one of the narrators of hadith from Imam al-Sadiq (a).[1] Umm Aswad was the daughter of A'yan b. Sunsun al-Shaybani and the sister of Zurara b. A'yan, 'Abd al-Malik b. A'yan, Humran b. A'yan, and Bukayr b. A'yan.[2]
According to a narration, she was the first individual of this family to convert to Shiism through Abu Khalid al-Kabuli, and her inclination led to the conversion of other members of the Al A'yan.[3] Umm Aswad died in 153/770, and it is said that she closed the eyes of her brother, Zurara, at the time of [his] death.[4]
'Allama al-Hilli, Astarabadi, and Hasan b. Dawud al-Hilli have described her as a knowledgeable lady (arifa).[5] Mamaqani, after citing the words of 'Allama al-Hilli, states that at least the "good status" (husn al-hal) of Umm Aswad can be clearly inferred from these descriptions.[6]
