In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. Bismi-Allāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm
O you wrapped up in your mantle! (1) Yā ayyuha l-muddaththir
Rise up and warn! (2) Qum faandhir
Magnify your Lord, (3) Wa rabbaka fakabbir
and purify your cloak, (4) Wa thiyābaka faṭahhir وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ ﴿٤﴾
and keep away from all impurity! (5) Warrujza fahjur وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ ﴿٥﴾
Do not grant a favour seeking a greater gain, (6) Wa lā tamnun tastakthir
and be patient for the sake of your Lord. (7) Wa lirabbika faṣbir وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ ﴿٧﴾
When the Trumpet will be sounded, (8) Fa idhā nuqira finnāqūr
that day will be a day of hardship, (9) Fadhalika yawma'idhiy yawmun 'asīr
not at all easy for the faithless.
Leave Me [to deal] with him whom I created alone, (11) Dharnī waman khalaqtu waḥīdā
and then furnished him with extensive means, (12) Waja’altu lahū mālammamdūdā وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا ﴿١٢﴾
and] gave him [sons to be at his side, (13) Wabanīna shuhūdā وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا ﴿١٣﴾
and facilitated [all matters] for him.
Still he is eager that I should give him more. (15) Thumma yaṭma’u an azīd
No indeed! He is an obstinate opponent of Our signs. (16) Kallāā innahū kāna liāāyātinā ‘anīdā
Soon I will overwhelm him with hardship. (17) Saurhiquhū ṣa'ūdā
Indeed he reflected and decided. (18) Innahū fakkara waqaddar
Perish he, how he decided! (19) Faqutila kayfa qaddar
Again, perish he, how he decided! (20) Thumma qutila kayfa qaddar
Then he looked; (21) Thumma naẓar
then he frowned and scowled.
Then he went away disdainfully, (23) Thumma adbara wastakbar
saying," It is nothing but magic handed down. (24) Faqāla in hadhāā illā siḥruyyuthar
It is nothing but the speech of a human being." (25) In hadhāā illā qaw lulbashar
Soon I shall cast him into Saqar. (26) Sauṣlīhi saqar
And what will show you what is Saqar? (27) Wa māā adrāka mā saqar
It neither spares nor leaves [anything]. (28) Lā tubqī wa lā tadhar
It burns the skin. (29) Law wāḥatullilbashar
There are nineteen [keepers] over it. (30) ‘alayhā tis’ata ‘ashar
We have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and that those given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and that those given the Book may not doubt and the faithful [as well], and that those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, and the faithless [along with them]," What did Allah mean by this description?" Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes, and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans. (31) Wa mā ja'alnā aṣḥāba l-nāri illā malāikataw wa mā ja'alnā 'iddatahum illā fitnatan lil-ladhīna kafarū liyastayqina l-ladhīna ūtulkitāba wa yazdāda l-ladhīna āmanū īmānaw wa lā yartāba l-ladhīna ūtu l-kitāba wa l-muminūna wa liyaqūla l-ladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍuw wā l-kāfirūna mādhā arāda Allāhu bihadhā mathalā Kadhalika yuḍillu Allāhu may yashāāu wa yahdī may yashā Wa mā ya'lamu junūda rabbika illā huwa Wa mā hiya illā dhikrā li-l-bashar
No indeed! By the Moon! (32) Kallā walqamar
By the night when it recedes! (33) Wallayli idh adbar
By the dawn when it brightens! (34) Waṣṣubḥi idhāā asfar
Indeed it is one of the greatest [signs] (35) Innahā la iḥdalkubar
a warner to all humans, (36) Nadhīrallilbashar
[alike] for those of you who like to advance ahead and those who would linger behind.
Every soul is hostage to what it has earned, (38) Kullu nafsimbimā kasabat rahīnah
except the People of the Right Hand.
[They will be] in gardens, questioning (40) Fī jannātiyyatasāāalūn
concerning the guilty: (41) ‘anilmujrimīn
" What drew you into Hell?" (42) Mā salakakum fī saqar
They will answer," We were not among those who prayed.
Nor did we feed the poor. (44) Walam naku nuṭ’imulmiskīn
We used to gossip along with the gossipers, (45) Wa kunnā nakhūḍu ma’alkhāāiḍīn
and we used to deny the Day of Retribution, (46) Wa kunnā nukadhdhibu biyawmiddīn
until death came to us."
So the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them. (48) Famā tanfa’uhum shafā’atushshāfi’īn
What is the matter with them that they evade the Reminder (49) Famā lahum ‘anittadhkirati mu’riḍīn
as if they were terrified asses (50) Ka annahum ḥumurummustanfirah
fleeing from a lion?
Rather everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures [from Allah].
No indeed! Rather they do not fear the Hereafter. (53) Kallā ballā yakhāfūnalāākhirah
No indeed! It is indeed a reminder. (54) Kallāā innahū tadhkirah
So let anyone who wishes remember it. (55) Famanshāāa dhakarah
And they will not remember unless Allah wishes. He is worthy of [your] being wary [of Him] and He is worthy to forgive.
