Ali Asghar Faqihi

ʿAlī Aṣghar Faqīhī (Persian: علی‌اصغر فقیهی) (b. 1917-18 – d. 2003-04) was a Shi'a writer, translator, and historian, and an alumnus of the Qom Seminary and the University of Tehran. He authored works in the fields of literature, theology, history, and Islamic geography, and translated books such as Nahj al-balagha. By the order of Ayatollah Burujirdi, Faqihi organized religious sessions at Hakim Nizami High School. His library, containing five thousand volumes, was donated to the Mar'ashi Najafi Library after his passing.

Faqihi studied in the seminary under masters such as Imam Khomeini, Mar'ashi Najafi, and Khwansari, and taught in high schools in Qom, including Din wa Danish High School. He passed away in 2003-04 and was buried in the Lady Ma'suma Shrine.

Status

'Ali Asghar Faqihi was a writer, historian, and translator of the 14th century[1] who published works including the translation of Nahj al-balagha and books on theology and Islamic history.[2]

He was born in 1917-18 in Qom into a clerical family.[3]He passed away in 2003-04 and was buried in the Lady Ma'suma Shrine.[4]

Ja'far Subhani, a Marja', introduced Faqihi as a lover of knowledge and an expert in the history of Iran.[5] Ali Karimi Jahromi, a seminary professor, describes him as having a simple lifestyle and being humble.[6]

Education in Seminary and University

Faqihi entered the Jahangirkhan School at the age of ten and learned the preliminaries and intermediate levels under masters such as Imam Khomeini, Gulpaygani, and Mar'ashi Najafi. He also attended the advanced classes of Sayyid Muhammad Taqi Khwansari for some time.[7] At the age of 19, he entered the University of Tehran.[8] Mahmoud Shahabi, Mahdi Elahi Qomshe'i, Badīʿ al-Zamān Furūzānfar, Ahmad Bahmanyar, Abdolazim Gharib, and Mohsen Hashtroodi were among his professors.[9] He attended the classes of Ahmad Kasravi for a while, but it is said that due to some of Kasravi's remarks, he desisted from continuing the classes.[10]

Activities

In 1940-41, after defending his thesis "The Influence of Iranians in the Expansion of Islamic Civilization" and obtaining a master's degree in literature, 'Ali Asghar Faqihi returned to Qom[11] and was occupied in teaching at high schools in the city. He also served as the principal of Hakim Nizami High School in Qom for some time.[12] With the establishment of Din-o-Danesh High School under the management of Sayyid Mohammad Beheshti, Faqihi taught Islamic history and the geography of Islamic countries in this school.[13] He was a close friend of Beheshti and Muhammad Mufatteh.[14]

Faqihi was also among the writers of articles for the magazine Maktab-i Islam[15] and the compiler of the Risalah of Ayatollah Burujirdi.[16] By the order of Ayatollah Borujerdi, he held weekly religious sessions with the presence of seminary speakers at Hakim Nizami High School (Imam al-Sadiq (a) High School) in Qom.[17]

Library

Faqihi possessed a library containing approximately 5,000 volumes of Persian and Arabic books and willed that they be made available to the public after his death; accordingly, his books were donated to the Mar'ashi Najafi Library after his passing.[19]
