Al-Muntaẓar (Arabic: المُنتَظَر) is one of the titles of Imam al-Mahdi (a),[1] signifying "the Awaited One" or the figure whose advent is anticipated by the people.[2] This epithet appears in various supplications dedicated to Imam al-Mahdi (a). Notably, it is cited in Mafatih al-jinan, which quotes al-Sayyid b. Tawus in a ziyara (visitation) for the Imam of the Time (a) with the salutation: "Peace be upon the awaited riser" (Arabic: السَّلَامُ عَلَی الْقَائِمِ الْمُنْتَظَر).[3][4] Additionally, in various traditions, supplications, and visitations, the Imam of the Time (a) is described as one who himself awaits the divine command.[5][6]

A narration attributed to Imam al-Jawad (a) elucidates the rationale behind designating the Twelfth Imam as al-Muntazar. The Imam stated that this title reflects the prolonged duration of the Occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (a). During this era, sincere believers will steadfastly await his reappearance, whereas skeptics will deny it and opponents will mock it. Furthermore, those who predict a specific time for his return will perish, while only those who submit to the divine will shall be saved.[7]
