Abu l-Qasim (teknonym)
Abu l-Qāsim (Arabic: أبوالقاسم) is a teknonym of Prophet Muhammad (s),[1] given to him after the birth of his son Qasim.[2] Al-Shaykh al-Saduq (d. 381/991–2), citing a narration, explains that the teknonym Abu l-Qasim given to the Prophet (s) refers to his role in guiding people. According to this narration, belief or disbelief in the Prophet (s) causes people to be divided into two groups: the people of Paradise and the people of Hell. Thus, he was called Abu l-Qāsim because he determines the fate of individuals in the Hereafter.[3] Al-Saduq further notes, based on the same narration, that the teknonym also alludes to the role of Imam Ali (a) on the Day of Judgment, where he is tasked with dividing Paradise and Hell. Since the Prophet (s) is regarded as the spiritual father of Imam Ali (a) and of all Muslims, this teknonym was bestowed upon him.[4]
Muhammad b. 'Ali Ardabili, in his work Jami' al-ruwat, reports that the teknonym Abu l-Qasim was also attributed to Imam al-Sajjad (a).[5] Additionally, it has been used for Imam al-Mahdi (a) as well.[6] According to 'Inayat Allah Quhpayi, a 11th/17th-century Shi'i biographer, the use of the teknonym Abu l-Qasim for Imam al-Mahdi (a) has been more frequent than its use for the Prophet (s).
Shaykh al-Hurr al-'Amili, in Wasa'il al-Shi'a, holds that if a person's name is "Muhammad," it is discouraged (makruh) to give him the teknonym "Abu l-Qasim."[7]
