Taqī, (Arabic: التَقي) meaning pious and God-wary,[1] is the most famous title of Imam al-Jawad (a),[2] the ninth Shi'a Imam. In his book Hayat al-Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, Baqir Sharif al-Qarashi, a researcher of Islamic history (d. 1433/2012), sheds light on the origins of this title. He explains that the Imam's piety before God, his sincere repentance, constant recourse to Him, and unwavering resistance against his personal desires and the demands of al-Ma'mun, the Abbasid caliph, are the reasons behind his title.[3]

As per a hadith cited in al-Shaykh al-Saduq's Ma'ani l-akhbar, the title of Taqi was bestowed upon the ninth Shi'a Imam due to his piety, as well as the fact that God safeguarded him from al-Ma'mun, who had attempted to assassinate the Imam.[4]
