Mufīd al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Asadī al-Ḥillī (Arabic: مفیدالدین ابوعبدالله محمد بن علي الاسدي الحلي), known as Ibn Juhaym (Arabic: اِبن جُهَیم), was a Shiite master of Ijaza (that is, masters who could give to their students permissions to transmit hadiths) in the 7th/13th century. Al-'Allama al-Hilli was one of his students.

Lineage and Birth

Ibn Tawus mentioned Ibn Juhaym's grandfather as Jahm. There is no information about the years of his birth and death, but a consideration of his masters and students implies that he was in the generation of al-Muhaqqiq al-Hilli (d. 676/1277).

Scholarly Character

What al-'Allama al-Hilli reported about a meeting between Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and al-Muhaqqiq al-Hilli in Hillah implies that ibn Juhaym was a prominent scholar of theology and usul al-fiqh in his time. Moreover, al-'Allama al-Hilli and Ibn Tawus acknowledged his scholarship in fiqh (jurisprudence). Al-Hurr al-'Amili considered him to be a man of literature and a poet as well.

Chains of transmissions of different hadiths show that Ibn Juhaym was a master of Ijaza. Al-Hurr al-'Amili believed that he was a truthful transmitter of hadiths.

Masters and Students

One of his masters was al-Sayyid Fakhkhar b. Mu'idd al-Musawi. His students include figures such as al-'Allama al-Hilli, Hasan b. Dawud al-Hilli, and al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Karim b. Tawus.

A report by al-Shahid al-Awwal implies that al-Sayyid Majd al-Din Muhammad b. 'Ali, the father of 'Amid al-Din, also transmitted hadiths from Ibn Juhaym.
