Sayyid ʿAbd Allāh Nidhām (Arabic: السید عبدالله نِظام) is a Shi'a cleric from Syria.[1] He is also the President of the Council of Scholars of the Followers of the Ahl al-Bayt School in Syria,[2].[3] and a member of the General Assembly of the Ahl-ul-Bayt World Assembly.[4] According to Rasul Ja'farian, a Shi'a researcher, 'Abd Allah Nidham is considered the Mufti (Fatwa issuer) of Shi'a Muslims in Syria.[5]

Religious Executive Responsibilities

Sayyid 'Abd Allah Nidham was born in Damascus and studied engineering; however, after the Islamic Revolution of Iran, he moved to Qom to study Islamic sciences.[6] Upon his return to Syria, he became the Friday prayer Imam of Sayyida al-Zahra Mosque in Damascus,[7] the President of the Al-Mahsaneya Seminary in Damascus,[8] and the President of the Lady Ruqayya Educational Complex (affiliated with Sham University in Syria).[9] Additionally, he heads the al-Ehsan Islamic Charity Association.”[10] Moreover, he serves as the supervisor of the Shariah Committee of “Al-Aqeelah Takaful Insurance,” which provides Shariah-compliant insurance services in Syria.[11]

Position after Political Changes in Syria

After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in the late 2024, he expressed hope in a statement that the political changes in Syria would lead to the betterment of all its people and that the security and rights of Syrian Shia's would be upheld as promised by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (opponents of Bashar al-Assad).[12].[13] However, after attacks by certain opposition groups on Shi'a religious centers, he stated that due to the diversity of armed groups and their lack of commitment to promises, the situation for Syrian Shia's had become critical, with no guarantees for their safety in the future.[14]

Sayyid Abdullah Nizam said that in the real field, we are witnessing the unilateral and destructive actions of some armed groups, to the extent that some of our sheikhs in certain areas have been subjected to aggression in order to carry out their religious orders. As an example, he referred to the orders and interference of Takfiri members regarding the combining of two prayers at the same time and said: "We are practically facing these problems."[15]
