Yazīd b. Thubayṭ al-ʿAbdī al-Baṣrī (Arabic: یَزید بن ثُبَیط العَبدی البَصري) was a martyr of Karbala and a nobleman of the 'Abd al-Qays tribe. He joined the caravan of Imam al-Husayn (a) together with his two sons, 'Abd Allah and 'Ubayd Allah, and a number of Shi'as in Abtah. They were martyred on the Day of Ashura.

Name and Lineage

His name has been mentioned in various other forms: Yazīd b. Thubayt (یزید بن ثبیت), Yazīd b. Nubayṭ (یزید بن نبیط),[1] Badr b. Ruqayd (بدر بن رقید), and Badr b. Ruqayṭ (بدر بن رقیط). He was from the 'Abd al-Qays tribe in Basra.[2]

Life

He was a companion of Abu l-Aswad al-Du'ali.[3] He lived in Basra and had ten sons. When Imam al-Husayn's (a) letter of request for aids arrived in Basra, Yazid b. Thubayt announced, in a meeting in Mariya bt. Munqidh's house where some Basra's Shi'as gathered, that he wanted to go to Mecca to help Imam al-Husayn (a). Two of his sons, 'Abd Allah and 'Ubayd Allah, as well as 'Amir b. Muslim al-'Abdi and his servant, Salim, Sayf b. Malik al-'Abdi and Adham b. Umayya al-'Abdi joined him. They met Imam al-Husayn's (a) caravan in Abtah near Mecca and set up their tent there. It is said that when Imam al-Husayn (a) heard about Yazid b. Thubayt's arrival, he went to Yazid's tent to meet him while Yazid had left his tent to meet the Imam (a). The Imam (a) stayed in Yazid's tent and waited for him to return. When Yazid arrived in the Imam's (a) tent, he was told that the Imam (a) had left to meet him. When he returned to his tent and saw the Imam (a), he recited the verse, "In the Bounty of Allah and His Mercy let them rejoice"[4]. He then greeted the Imam (a) and then told him about what had happened. Imam al-Husayn (a) prayed for him and then they joined the Imam's (a) caravan.[5]

Martyrdom

Yazid and his two sons were martyred on the Day of Ashura.[6] According to some sources, they were martyred in individual wars,[7] and according to others, they were martyred in the first attack.[8] He and his sons are mentioned in Ziyara al-Shuhada: "Peace be upon Zayd b. Thubayt al-Qaysi; peace be upon 'Abd Allah and 'Ubayd Allah, the two sons of Yazid b. Thubayt al-Qaysi".
