Abū l-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Ghadāʾirī al-Wāsițī al-Baghdādī (Arabic: أبوحسین أحمد بن الحسین الغضائري الواسطي البغدادي), known as Ibn al-Ghadāʾirī (Arabic: ابن الغضائري), was a Shi'a Muhaddith (narrator) and scholar of 'ilm al-rijal in 4th/10th and 5th/11th centuries. He was a contemporary of al-Najashi and al-Shaykh al-Tusi. He authored the book al-Du'afa' (the weak ones) in rijal which is also known as Rijal Ibn al-Ghada'iri.

Biography

His birthdate is unknown. His father, Husayn b. 'Ubayd Allah al-Ghada'iri, was a Shi'a faqih and scholar in rijal in his time and authored many works. According to rijal and biography books, Ahmad was teacher of al-Najashi and al-Shaykh al-Tusi and they were his companions.

There are two different reports about his teknonym: Abu l-Hasan and Abu l-Husayn.

Words of Other Scholars about Him

Mudarris Tabrizi writes about him, "Ibn al-Ghada'iri was one of the most eminent and reliable scholars in Shi'a, whose reliability does need to be proved."

Al-Shaykh al-Hurr al-'Amili mentions Ibn al-Ghada'iri among the scholars contemporary of al-Shaykh al-Tusi and adds that al-'Allama al-Hilli has relied on him.

Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Khwansari eulogized his characteristics extensively.

Muhammad Taqi Shushtari says, "Ibn al-Ghada'iri was a critic of narrators and a researcher in hadith. He had vast information in 'ilm al-rijal."

Yaqut al-Hamawi -a Sunni scholar- refers to him as scholar and virtuous, and writes, "He had such a beautiful handwriting that rivaled that of Ibn Mulqa."

His teachers are:

  • Al-Husayn b. 'Ubayd Allah b. al-Ghada'iri (his father)
  • Al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. Bindar al-Qummi

Works

Al-Rijal

His most famous work is his book in 'ilm al-rijal; although Shi'a scholars have different viewpoints about the attribution of this book to him or his father. The book is known as al-Du'afa', Kitab fi l-jarh, or Rijal Ibn al-Ghada'iri.

Al-Shaykh al-Tusi attributed two books to him.

Al-Sayyid Muhsin al-Amin ascribed five books to him. Likewise, al-Sayyid Hasan al-Sadr counts five books and ascribed them to him.

Demise

Al-Najashi's words imply that Ahmad b. al-Husayn passed away before him. Al-Najashi passed away in 450/1058-9.

In al-Fihrist, al-Shaykh al-Tusi said that Ahmad b. al-Husayn passed away in his youth before he reaches 40.
