Al-Ḥasan b. Maḥbub (Arabic: الحسن بن محبوب) (d. 224/838-9), was a companion of Imam al-Kazim (a), Imam al-Rida (a), and Imam al-Jawad (a).
He is one of the great figures in hadith and fiqh and one of the People of Consensus, whose reliability is affirmed by all the scholars of rijal.
His name appears in the chains of transmission of many hadiths in the Four Books. He quoted hadith from most of the People of Consensus. And transmitters such as Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Barqi, 'Abd al-'Azim al-Hasani, and Sahl b. Ziyad al-Adami quote hadith from him. Most of his hadiths are related to fiqh.
His most famous work is al-Mashikha, one of the earliest works in Shi'a fiqh and rijal.
Life
Al-Hasan was born in 129/746-7 or 149/766-7. His ancestor Wahb was freed by Jarir b. 'Abd Allah al-Bajali (he chose to be a servant of Imam 'Ali (a) when he was freed), so his family had the tie of wila' with the Kufan tribe of Bajila, Hence, al-Hasan was called[1] al-Bajali[2] or Mawla Bajila.[3]
Al-Hasan's teknonym is Abu Ali[4] and his epithet is al-Sarrad or al-Zarrad[5] (armor maker), which refers to the occupation of his great-grandfather Wahb.[6]
Considering al-Hasan's quotation of hadith from people like Abu Hamza al-Thumali, it seems that he started learning hadith from an early age. His father's encouragements must have played a role, as al-Kashshi[7] reports that he would give one dirham to al-Hasan for every hadith he wrote from 'Ali b. Ri'ab.
Later in his life, al-Hasan and three other figures became "the four pillars" (al-arkan al-arba'a) of the Shi'a in their time.[8]
His sons Muhammad and Harun and his grandson Ja'far b. Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. Mahbub are mentioned among hadith transmitters.[9]

Comapnions of Imam al-Baqir (a)
Companions of Imam al-Sadiq (a)
Companions of Imam al-Kazim (a) and Imam al-Rida (a) |
All the scholars of Rijal agree that he was a reliable hadith transmitter.[10] His name is mentioned among the companions of Imam al-Kazim (a),[11] Imam al-Rida (a),[12] and Imam al-Jawad (a).[13] And he is considered as one of the People of Consensus.[14]
His name appears in the chains of transmission of nearly three thousand hadiths in the Four Books.[15] The hadiths he quoted include a wide range of topics, including beliefs, ethics, and jurisprudence.[16]
Teachers and Students
According to al-Khoei,[17] apart from a few hadiths he quoted directly from Imam al-Kazim (a) and Imam al-Rida (a), he quoted hadith from 188 hadith transmitters, sixty of which were of the companions of Imam al-Sadiq (a).[18]
Most of his hadiths are from:
- 'Ali b. Ri'ab,
- Abu Ayyub Ibrahim b. Ziyad al-Khazzaz,
- 'Abd Allah b. Sinan (companions of Imam al-Sadiq (a)),
- Hisham b. Salim,
- 'Ala' b. Razin (companions of Imam al-Sadiq and Imam al-Kazim [a]).[19]
He also quoted hadith from eight traditionists of the People of Consensus.[20]
Many hadith transmitters quoted hadith from al-Hasan b. Mahbub,[21] but most of his hadiths are quoted by
Al-Hasan's abundant hadiths on the imamate of Imam al-Rida (a)[23] and his attention to hadith criticism, reflected in his works on rijal and his al-Mashikha,[24] are noteworthy.
Works
Al-Hasan b. Mahbub was a compiler of great hadith collections.[25]
Al-Shaykh al-Tusi[26] mentions that al-Hasan had many works, including
- Al-Mashikha
- Al-Hudud
- Al-Diyat
- Al-Fara'id[27]
- Al-Nikah
- Al-Talaq
- Al-Nawadir which had "about one-thousand pages."
Ibn al-Nadim[28] adds al-Tafsir and al-'Itq, and Ibn Shahrashub[29] adds Ma'rifat ruwat al-akhbar to the list.
Unfortunately, none of al-Hasan's works are extant today, though some of them seem to have been available until the 10th/16th century.
Al-Mashikha
Al-Hasan's most famous work was al-Mashikha on hadith transmitters and their hadiths, regarded as one of the earliest Shi'a works on rijal and fiqh.[30] Ibn Idris al-Hilli quotes some parts of al-Mashikha in the Mustatrafat section of his al-Sara'ir.
Al-Shahid al-Thani has a collection of about one-thousand hadiths from al-Mashikha, indicating the importance and comprehensiveness of al-Hasan's work.[31]
Demise
Al-Hasan b. Mahbub passed away in 224/838-9 when he was 95 or 75.
