'Abd al-'Aziz b. Muslim

ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muslim (Arabic: عبدالعزیز بن مسلم) was a companion of Imam al-Rida (a)[1] and the narrator of the Hadith of Marw.[2] According to al-Sayyid Abu l-Qasim al-Khoei, a Shi'a expert in Rijal, 'Abd al-'Aziz is not discussed in biographical sources except in Rijal al-Tusi.[3] Muhammad Mu'min, a Shi'a jurist, also stated that 'Abd al-'Aziz has not been explicitly considered as reliable in biographical sources.[4] However, some scholars of Rijal such as Mirza Muhammad Al-Istarabadi[5] and Abd Allah Mamaqani[6] believe that his good status (ḥusn al-ḥāl) can be inferred from some hadiths.[7]

'Aziz Allah 'Utaridi, a Shi'a hadith scholar, in his book Rāwīyān-i Imām Riḍā (a) dar Musnad al-Riḍā, stated that 'Abd al-'Aziz was in the service of Imam al-Rida (a) in Marw and paid special attention to the issues of Imamate and Caliphate.[8] Also, the Hadith of Marw is narrated through him in the book al-Kafi,[9] in which the position of Imams of the Shi'a is explained and the Imamate is proven to be exclusive to Ahl al-Bayt (a) based on Quranic verses.[10]

According to hadith and biographical sources, 'Abd al-'Aziz b. Muslim narrated from Yahya b. 'Abd Allah.[11] Also, al-Qasim b. al-'Ala',[12] al-Qasim b. Muslim (his brother),[13] and al-Husayn b. 'Ali al-'Abdi[14] have narrated from him. His name appears in the chains of transmission of theological[15] and exegetical hadiths.[16]
