Mausoleum of Ali b. Mahziyar

From wikishia

The Mausoleum of Ali b. Mahziyar is a religious ziyarah site located in the Khaz'aliyya neighborhood of Ahwaz.[1] Based on historical documents and travelogues, this structure is considered the starting point for the formation of modern Ahwaz in terms of architecture and urban planning.[2] This place is visited by pilgrims from 30 countries.[3]

According to popular belief, the person buried in this mausoleum is Ali b. Mahziyar al-Ahwazi, a companion of Imam al-Rida (a), Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), and Imam al-'Askari (a),[4] who also met Imam al-Mahdi (a).[5] It is said that in 201/816-17, Imam al-Rida (a) stayed in this location on his way to Marw. A mosque named Masjid al-Rida was built by Ali b. Mahziyar, and he was later buried there according to his will.[6]

However, some believe that the owner of the tomb is Ali b. Ibrahim b. Mahziyar al-Ahwazi, the nephew of Ali b. Mahziyar, who met Imam al-Mahdi (a) during the Minor Occultation,[7] and that Ali b. Mahziyar is buried in Jajarm.[8]

The last darih installed in the Mausoleum of Ali b. Mahziyar in 2017.

In the western part of the mausoleum, there is a hall said to be the same Masjid al-Rida where Imam al-Rida (a) resided.[9] A number of scholars and martyrs of the Iran-Iraq War are also buried next to this shrine.[10] This place is a center for religious gatherings of the people, especially on the eves of Friday.[11]

The reconstruction of the mausoleum began in 2011,[12] but its sudden demolition faced public protest.[13] According to the Director General of Endowments of Khuzestan Province, in the new reconstruction plan, the area of the mausoleum has increased to approximately 53,000 square meters.[14]
