ʿInāyat Allāh Quhpāyī (Arabic: عنایتالله قُهْپایی) (d. after 1026/1617-8) was a Shiite scholar of rijal (knowledge of reliability or unreliability of hadith transmitters) in the eleventh/seventeenth century and the author of Majma' al-rijal, a well-known book on rijal.[1] In that book, he makes an alphabetic order of the hadith transmitters mentioned in the five books of Shiite rijal (Rijal al-Kashshi, Rijal al-Tusi, al-Fihrist by al-Tursi, Rijal al-Najashi, and Rijal Ibn al-Ghada'iri), supplemented by additional transmitters who were not mentioned in those books.[2]
Before he wrote Majma' al-rijal, 'Inayat Allah Quhpayi had organized each of the five books of Shiite rijal, except Rijal Ibn al-Ghada'iri, into alphabetic order and added comments on them.[3] Moreover, he wrote commentaries on Manhaj al-maqal by Muhammad Istarabadi and Naqd al-rijal by Mustafa Tafrishi.[4]
'Inayat Allah Quhpayi attended the lectures of al-Muqaddas al-Ardabili, al-Shaykh al-Baha'i, and 'Abd Allah al-Shushtari al-Isfahani.[5] His students are not mentioned in the relevant sources. However, Aqa Buzurg Tihrani mentions a book on rijal, whose author introduces himself as Abu l-Hasan b. 'Abd Allah, a student of Quhpayi.[6] Aqa Buzurg believes that he is probably Abu l-Hasan b. 'Abd Allah al-Kashi (d. after 1020/1611-2).[7]
Quhpayi is titled as al-Zaki al-Najafi.[8] There are disagreements about his lineage. Some biographers believe that he was originally from Kuhpayih, a town in eastern Isfahan[9], and others believe that he was from Najaf.[10] 'Abd Allah al-Afandi, a biographer, holds that he was originally from Najaf, although he was born in Kuhpayih.[11] He lived in Najaf and Isfahan, and for a short time, he lived in Kuhpayih at the command of Abbas I.[12]
There is no information about the date of his death. According to Ja'far Sobhani, a contemporary Shiite theologian and scholar of rijal, since Quhpayi transcribed the book Man la yahduruh al-faqih in 1026/1617, his death must have been after this date.[13]
