Khālid b. Abī Karīma (Arabic:خالِد بن اَبي کَريمَة) was a transmitter of Imam al-Baqir's (a). In Sunni hadith collections, there are hadiths narrated by him from the Holy Prophet (s). Some Shi'a rijal scholars have considered him among non-Shi'a companions of Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a).

His Teknonym, Name and Title

His teknonym was Abu 'Abd al-Rahman[1] and the name of his father was Maysara.[2] His title was al-Mada'ini[3] and al-Iskafi[4] while Sunni scholars of rijal have considered him from Sunbulan neighborhood in Isfahan living in Kufa.[5]

His Authenticity in Transmitting Hadith

He has been mentioned among the companions of Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a).[6] In early Shia books of rijal, there are no expression suggesting his authenticity, praise or criticism, but in Sunni books of rijal, there are different and sometimes contradictory attributes mentioned for him; some have mentioned him as authentic[7] and some others as unreliable.[8]

Some scholars have expressed doubt him being a Twelver Shia[9] and because Sunni rijal scholars have been silent about his religion and mostly have considered him authentic, Shoushtari has considered him among the Sunni companions of Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a).[10] The evidence for this claim is a narration transmitted by him about Sa'y between Safa and Marwa which is compatible with Sunni narrations in this regard.[11]

His Hadiths

Khalid b. Abi Karima had a collection of Imam al-Baqir's (a) hadiths and al-Najashi was aware about it through Ibn Nuh.[12] In Shia books of hadiths, no hadiths have been quoted from it. In Sunni hadiths collections, there are hadiths narrated by him from the Holy Prophet (s) and others.[13]

Khalid has transmitted hadiths from Imam al-Baqir (a), Mu'awiya b. Qarah al-Muzani, 'Akrama Mawla b. 'Abbas and Abu Ja'far 'Abd Allah b. Miswar al-Mada'ini.

People including Sufyan b. 'Uyayna, Sharik b. 'Abd Allah, Waki' b. Jarrah, Shu'aba b. Hajjaj and Marwan b. Mu'awiya al-Fizari have transmitted hadiths from him.[14]
