Qur'an 48:28 presents the promise of the ultimate victory of truth over falsehood[1] and the superiority of Islam over all religions.[2] According to this verse, God Almighty sent the Prophet (s) with two things to realize this matter: guidance (huda) and the religion of truth (din al-haqq). "Guidance" is interpreted as clear proof and argument (hujjat)[3] or the Quran.[4] The "religion of truth" is considered to be Islam, whose beliefs and laws correspond with truth and reality,[5] and according to Qur'an 41:42, falsehood has no way into it.[6]

Regarding the meaning of the superiority of Islam, several theories have been proposed: some consider it a logical victory through argument and proof;[7] while others consider it an external dominance and force, and the spread of Islam throughout the world.[8]
There is also a difference of opinion regarding how the superiority and victory over other religions will be realized. Some have applied it to the victories of the Prophet (s);[9] however, others, based on Shi'a narrations,[10] believe that this will only be realized with the Reappearance of Imam al-Mahdi (a).[11] Of course, Allama Tabataba'i explicitly states that the discussion of the Reappearance mentioned in exegetical narrations is not the occasion of revelation or the literal meaning of the verse, but rather its ta'wil (esoteric interpretation).[12] A number of Sunni exegetes, based on narrations,[13] have applied the realization of this verse to the return of Jesus.[14]
It is narrated in Majma' al-bayan that some have considered the verse to mean the Prophet's awareness of all religions;[15] but this probability is considered remote.[16]
