Sālim b. ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Allāh (Arabic: سالِم بن عَمْرو بن عَبْدالله) was one of the martyrs of Karbala. He participated in Muslim b. 'Aqil's uprising, and joined Imam al-Husayn (a) after Muslim's martyrdom. He was martyred on the Day of Ashura.

Companionship of Muslim b. 'Aqil

Salim b. 'Amr b. 'Abd Allah was a servant of the clan of Banu l-Madina al-Kalbi, and was a Shi'a in Kufa.[1] He accompanied Muslim b. 'Aqil in his uprising, and after Muslim's martyrdom, he was arrested by Kathir b. Shahab. He escaped 'Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad's prison after a while and hid in his own tribe.[2]

Joining Imam al-Husayn (a)

When Imam al-Husayn (a) arrived in Karbala, he was joined by Salim and some people from Banu Kalb. He was martyred on the Day of Ashura.[3] In the book, Ibsar al-'ayn, Ibn Shahrashub is quoted as saying that Salim was martyred within the first attack on the Day of Ashura.[4] However, he is not listed among the first martyrs in extant versions of Ibn Shahrashub's Manaqib.[5]

Skeptical Considerations

Salim is not mentioned as a martyr of Karbala in early Shiite sources of history and rijal.[6] However, he is mentioned as a martyr of Karbala in Ziyara al-Shuhada as cited in books of hadiths, such as Iqbal al-a'mal and Bihar al-anwar: "peace be upon Salim the servant of Banu l-Madina Kalbi".[7]

However, he is not mentioned in the version of Ziyarat al-Shuhada cited in al-Shaykh al-Mufid's al-Mazar as well as Ibn Mashhadi's Al-Mazar. Muhammad Taqi Shushtari has cast doubts over the existence of such a person.[8]
