Related VersesQur'an 2:213

Qur'an 3:49 refers to the mission of Jesus (a) and his miracles.[1] This verse attributes acts such as raising the dead and healing the sick to Jesus (a) and is among the proofs used to establish the generative authority (wilaya takwiniyya) of prophets and saints.[2] Based on this verse, the human soul can, by divine permission, attain a power capable of performing extraordinary acts.[3]

The generative authority of the prophets, which is defined as being empowered by God to exercise control over the universe,[4] is agreed upon by Shi'a scholars.[5]

According to commentators, the repetition of the phrase "by God's permission" (bi-idhn Allah) in Qur'an 3:49 emphasizes that the generative authority of prophets and saints is dependent on divine permission and power, and this belief never implies likening them to God or committing polytheism.[6] In part of the verse, Jesus (a) speaks of his knowledge of the unseen (ilm al-ghayb) by informing people of what they eat and store in their houses, which is presented as evidence for the possibility of the knowledge of the unseen for righteous servants.[7]

The verse also introduces Jesus (a) as a messenger to the Children of Israel, which some take as evidence that the law (shari'a) of Jesus (a) was limited to the Children of Israel.[8] However, 'Allama Tabataba'i, citing Qur'an 2:213, considers the law of Jesus (a) to be universal.[9]
