Verse 150 of Sura al-Nisa' (Qur'an 4:150) condemns the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) who accept some Prophets and deny others.[1] The Jews accepted the prophets before Moses but denied prophet Jesus (a) and prophet Muhammad (s). Similarly, Christians accepted prophets up to Jesus but refused to accept the prophethood of prophetMuhammad (s).[2]

| — Qur'an 4:150 | ||
God has described the state and actions of the polytheists and hypocrites in numerous preceding verses, such as Qur'an 4:137 to Qur'an 4:141. In this verse, He points out some of the objectionable behaviors of the People of the Book. Furthermore, in this verse and Qur'an 4:151, the People of the Book are considered disbelievers due to their disbelief, and they are promised a painful punishment.[3]
According to Abdullah Jawadi Amuli, the author of Tafsir-i Tasnim, the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) believe in the principle of prophethood, but they act selectively in accepting the prophets.[4] They behave neither like the polytheists who did not accept any prophet, nor like the Muslims who believe in all prophets.[5]
According to Muhammad Taqi Mudarrisi, the author of Min huda l-Qur'an, the People of the Book only accepted prophets who were compatible with their interests and rejected prophets who contradicted their desires.[6] Nasir Makarem Shirazi, the author of Tafsir-i Nimuna, also mentions following one's whims, ignorant bigotry, and jealousy as factors for denying certain prophets.[7]
Makarim Shirazi believes that true faith does not mean that a person accepts only what matches their desires and rejects what is contrary to their will; such behavior is a form of worshipping desires, not worshipping God.[8] Therefore, it is essential for a person to believe in all prophets,[9] because discriminating between prophets and denying some of them is tantamount to denying God,[10] and such individuals are recognized as absolute disbelievers;[11] since all prophets are messengers of God[12] and all prophets are on a shared path, and prophethood is a harmonious and continuous current. Prophets play the role of teachers who guide humans through various stages of life.[13] Thus, believing in some prophets and denying others is not acceptable.[14]
In Tafsir al-Qummi, this verse is applied to the deniers of the wilaya of Imam Ali (a); those who accepted the prophethood of the Prophet (s) but denied the wilaya of Imam Ali (a).[15]
