AboutDescription of the righteous as those who fear the punishment of the Resurrection

Qur'an 76:10 (Verse 10 of Sura al-Insan) describes the righteous as those who fear the punishment[1] and retribution[2] of their Lord on the Day of Resurrection.[3] This verse was revealed concerning Imam Ali (a) and his family.[4] In this verse, the Day of Resurrection is referred to as an intense day[5] and a harsh day.[6] The term"qamtarira" signifies a state of extreme and severe hardship.[7]

Verse 10 of Sura al-Insan is a continuation of the preceding verses such as the Verse of Feeding[8] and shares a common occasion of revelation with these verses, which was revealed concerning Imam Ali (a), Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a), al-Hasanayn (a), and their maidservant Fidda.[9] This occasion of revelation is based on narrations and writings of exegetes from all Islamic sects.[10]

Fadlallah, a Shi'a scholar and exegete, believes that despite the occasion of revelation, this verse is universally applicable to all people at any time and place.[11] It is said that fear of the Resurrection keeps people steadfast on the path of their responsibility and motivates them to prioritize anything that will protect them from the punishment of the Resurrection.[12]

Qur'an 76:10 has been considered the reason for the preceding verses; because those who fed others did so solely for God's sake and this points to them fearing the Day of Resurrection, which is difficult and severe.[13] Nasir Makarim Shirazi, a Shi'a scholar and exegete, believes that the expressions "severe" (shadid) and "harsh" (saʿb) are attributes of humans. The use of these two expressions for the Day of Resurrection is to emphasize its terrifying nature. The events of that day are so severe and distressing that not only are humans gloomy on that day, but it is as if the day itself is gloomy.[14]

It has been noted that the mention of fear of the Day of Resurrection from the tongue of those concerning whom the verse was revealed was not their actual speech, but rather their state of being[15] or that God was aware of what was within their hearts and expressed it.[16]
