Al-Imām al-Ḥusayn (a) wa aṣḥabuh (Arabic: الإمام الْحُسَیْن وَأصْحابُه) is a book in Arabic about the Battle of Karbala written by Fadl Ali Qazwini, the Shi'a scholar of fourteenth/twentieth century. This work discusses men companions of Imam al-Husayn (a), maqtal of Imam (a) and the women present in Karbala in three parts. The author considered some famous historical reports about the uprising of Imam al-Husayn (a) false and among distortions of Ashura, but accepts the occurrence of some events in nature after the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn (a).
Content
The book is written in three parts about the male companions of Imam (a), maqtal of Imam (a) and the women of the Ahl al-Bayt (a); but, in newer editions, this sectioning is not observed and only the second part of the work exists.
Speeches of Imam (a) in the form of sermons, letters, statements and wills; Imam's (a) journey from Medina to Mecca and from there to Karbala and mentioning reports about some stations and the events on the eve and the Day of Ashura are among the discussions of the book.
Mentioning Extraordinary Events
Qazwini mentioned several reports from Shi'a and Sunnis about the changes in nature such as darkening of the sky, raining blood from the sky, solar eclipse and crying of the sky and the earth after the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn (a). After mentioning these reports, he did not consider them exaggeration or metaphor and criticized the rejectors and justifiers. He mentions the events after the death of Prophet Yahya (a) and the solar eclipse on the day the Prophet (s) passed away and rejected the justifications about the events on the day of Ashura.
Fighting with Distortions
The author considered some historical reports about the uprising of Imam al-Husayn (a) among the examples of distortions of Ashura such as:
- Imam al-Husayn (a) allowed his companions to leave the camp on the eve of Ashura and asked each of them to take one of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) with them.
- When Imam al-Husayn (a) heard the news about the martyrdom of Muslim b. 'Aqil, wanted to return to Medina, but the children of 'Aqil prohibited him.
