Dawma bt. ʿAmr b. Wahb (Arabic: دومَة بنت عَمْرو بن وَهب) -the mother of al-Mukhtar b. Abu 'Ubayd al-Thaqafi- was a Shi'a woman, who upraised along with her son for avenging Imam al-Husayn (a).

Lineage and Marriage

Dawma was daughter of 'Amr b. Wahb b. Mut'ab b. Wahb b. Ka'b al-Thaqafi.[1] Some said that her father's name was Wahb b. Mut'ab;[2] but it seems that they mistakenly dropped 'Amr" from her full name.[3]

Dawma married Abu 'Ubayd al-Thaqafi.[4] According to some historical accounts, Abu 'Ubayd -al-Mukhtar's father- was very fastidious about his future wife and rejected many women, until someone told him in his dream to marry "Dawmat al-Hasna'" (Dawma the beautiful.)[5]

Children

She had five sons:

Dream

Dawma says: "One night during my pregnancy with al-Mukhtar I dreamed of someone reciting this poem to me:

Be informed of a son who is like a lion more than anything. When men are fighting very hard on worthless things, he'll have the most valuable portion."[8]

She also had a dream after his birth, in which she was told that her son will have many followers.[9]

Companionship with al-Mukhtar

In the book Balaghat al-nisa', Ibn Tayfur narrated that she was an eloquent rhetorician. When al-Mukhtar and his companions were under siege by the army of Mus'ab b. Zubayr, she stood by her son, although someone suggested surviving her from the siege.[10]
