The Imam 'Ali (a) Mosque in Sana'a is one of the historical mosques of Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, built on the site of the house of Sa'ida al-Barzajiyya.[1] Imam 'Ali (a) stayed at Sa'ida's house after arriving in Sana'a.[2] Nevertheless, the construction of the mosque has also been attributed to Sa'ida in 8/629.[3]

This mosque is located in the old part of the city of Sana'a[4] and is registered on the World Heritage List.[5] Its inscriptions in Kufic script include phrases such as La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad Rasul Allah, 'Ali Wali Allah[6] and verses such as the Tathir Verse and Qur'an 11:86 (Baqiyyat Allah khayrun lakum).[7]

The mosque had a water well that dried up over time.[8] In 1350/1931-32, by the order of Mutawakkil 'ala Allah Yahya b. Muhammad, the Zaydi ruler of Yemen, the water needed for the mosque was supplied from adjacent wells. Also, in 1327/1909-10, Husayn Rahabi expanded it,[9] and according to the phrase carved above its entrance, it was also renovated in 1407/1986-87.[10]
