Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥīd b. Aḥmad al-Bazzāz (Arabic:ابوعَبدالله اَحمَد بن عَبدالواحِد بن احمد البَزّاز) (d. 423/1031-2), commonly known as Ibn ʿAbdūn (ابن عَبدون) or Ibn Ḥāshir (ابن حاشِر), was a Shi'a jurist (faqih) and hadith scholar (muhaddith). He learned hadith under masters such as: Ibn Dawud al-Qummi, Abu Ghalib al-Zurari, Abu l-Mufaddal al-Shaybani, Ibn Qulawayh al-Qummi, Ibn Ji'abi and Ibn Junayd al-Iskafi.

Al-Najashi, al-Shaykh al-Tusi, Ibn Ghada'iri and Ja'far b. Muhammad al-Duristi have narrated hadith from him.

Biography

There is no information about the exact details of his life. About the beginning of his studies, there is an account that he met Ibn Zubayr al-Qurashi in 348/959 and learned hadith from him.

According to some reports about his presence in Baghdad and considering that most of his masters and pupils were from Baghdad, it can be said that he has spent most of his life in Baghdad.

According to Ibn Makula, Ibn 'Abdun travelled to different regions to hear hadith. He mentions that Ibn 'Abdun heard al-Kafi, compiled by al-Kulayni, in Tennis -a city in Egypt.

Works such as: Akhbar al-Sayyid ibn Muhammad (Sayyid Isma'il al-Himyari), Tarikh, commentary on Fadakiyya sermon from the Lady Fatima (a), Amal al-Jumu'a , Adab al-hukama and al-Hadithayn al-mukhtalifayn have been ascribed to him. However, none of them are extant today.

Ibn Makula mentioned his book about the index of Shi'a books and said that the edition he had seen was extensive. Al-Najashi and al-Shaykh al-Tusi used this book in their writings.

In al-Amali, al-Shaykh al-Tusi narrated a collection of hadith from Ibn 'Abdun; but the name of the book, he has narrated the hadiths from, is unknown.

Likewise, in al-Manaqib, Ibn Shahrashub benefited from one of Ibn 'Abdun's works; but he did not mention the title of that work.
