The tribe of Nakhaʿ (Arabic: قبيلة نخع) is the most famous sub-tribe of the tribe of Madhhij.[1] They are related to Jasr b. 'Amr[2] who moved away from his tribe and thus was given the epithet Nakha'.[3] This tribe resided in Yemen, however, after they embraced Islam, they moved to Kufa and Egypt.[4]

In the middle of Muharram 11/632, about two hundred people from Nakha' who had pledged allegiance to Ma'adh b. Jabal, the companion of the Prophet (s), as the representative of the Prophet (s) came to the Prophet (s) and converted to Islam.[5] The Prophet (s) prayed for the tribe of Nakha' and asked for God's blessings for them. [6]

People from this tribe participated in the battle of Qadisiyya, and some of them were martyred.[7] They also participated in the battle of Yarmuk.[8] In addition, people from this tribe fought in Imam Ali's army in the battles of Jamal, Seffin and Nahrawan.[9]

The tribe of Nakha' has many famous figures. Some of them are:

  • Artat b. Ka'b was one of the elites of this tribe who went to the Prophet (s) along with his people and was martyred in the battle of Qadisiyya.[13]

There is a group of Arabs living in some areas of Iran like Birjand who are said to be descendants of this tribe who traveled to Khurasan in the army of Hazim b. Khuzayma, during the reign of al-Mansur al-'Abbasi (r. 136/754 to 158/775), to suppress the uprising of the people of Khurasan and Sistan and resided in an area called Khusf.[19]

The book Qabila-yi Nakha' dar tarikh-i Islam wa Tashayyu' ta payan-i qarn-i siwwum-i Hijri (the tribe of Nakha' in the history of Islam and Shi'a until the end of the 3rd Hijri century), by Asghar Muntazir al-Qa'im and Maryam Sa'idiyan, is about the status and role of the tribe of Nakha' in the events throughout the history of Islam and Shi'a and their relationship with Ahl al-Bayt (a) in the first three Hijri centuries.
