In this session, articles were presented by scholars such as Sayyid Ja'far Murtada al-'Amili, Sayyid Jawad Shahristani, Rida Ustadi, and Nasir Makarim Shirazi.

This congress continued in subsequent sessions. The top articles of the festival and subjects related to the conference theme have been published by the secretariat of the World Congress on Imam al-Rida (a).

History and Held Sessions

The first International Congress on Imam al-Rida (a) was held in 1984 concurrently with the inauguration of Razavi University of Islamic Sciences in Mashhad.[1] Holding this congress was approved in January 1984 in a meeting of the Scientific Council of Astan Quds Razavi.[2] The goal of forming this congress was stated as launching a scientific, cultural, and research movement in the field of knowing and introducing the eighth Imam of the Shi'a, Imam al-Rida (a).[3]

The First World Congress on Imam al-Rida (a)

The first session of the Congress on Imam al-Rida (a) was held from August 9-13, 1984 corresponding to 11 Dhu l-Qa'da 1404, the birth anniversary of Imam al-Rida (a), to 15 Dhu l-Qa'da), under the presidency of Ahmad Jannati.[4] Sayyid Jawad Mustafawi served as the secretary and Sayyid Jalal Fayyadi as the executive deputy of the congress.[5] Among the speakers were Abbas Va'iz Tabasi (the then custodian of Astan Quds Razavi), Sayyid Ali Khamenei (the then president and the second leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran), Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (the then speaker of the parliament), Abdullah Jawadi Amuli, Ahmad Jannati, and Emami Kashani.[6]

Furthermore, articles were presented by scholars such as Abdullah Jawadi Amuli, Sayyid Ja'far Murtada al-'Amili, Sayyid Jawad Shahristani, Rida Ustadi, Nasir Makarim Shirazi, and Muhammad Mahdi Najaf.[7]

In this session, approximately eighty Iranian and foreign researchers and writers were invited, of whom about two-thirds did not participate.[8] The reasons for the lack of reception were cited as the concurrence of the congress with the dispatch of pilgrims to Hajj and negative propaganda and obstacles created by foreign countries that prevented foreign researchers from coming to Iran.[9]

Subsequent Sessions

The second congress was held in 1406/1986.[10] The third congress in 1408/1988[11] was dedicated to examining the life of Imam Musa al-Kazim (a).[12] The fourth session of the international congress was held in Dhu l-Qa'da 1412/May 1992 with a speech by Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the then president.[13]

The fifth World Congress on Imam al-Rida (a) with the slogan "Justice for All, Oppression to None" was held in May 2024/Shawwal 1445 with a message from Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and several sources of emulation.[14]

The sixth session of this conference was held on May 5, 2025/ 7 Dhu l-Qa'da 1446 with the theme "Human Rights and Dignity in the Teachings of Imam al-Rida (a)" and in the presence of Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the Quds Hall of the Imam al-Rida Shrine.[15]
