Qur'an 8:33 states that God has spared the Islamic Umma from annihilating punishment because Prophet Muhammad (s) was among them and because they sought Istighfar.[1]
This verse was revealed in response to the request of the polytheists of Mecca for Divine punishment. They said that if the Qur'an was the truth, a punishment should descend upon them from the sky.[2]

Exegetes have interpreted the punishment mentioned in this verse as the Punishment of Istisal (annihilating punishment).[3] Therefore, according to Allama Tabataba'i, the verse rules out punishment of the entire Umma and does not preclude the punishment of specific individuals, such as Abu Lahab.[4]
Exegetes consider the negation of punishment for the Umma to be a manifestation of the Prophet's being Rahmatun li-l-Alamin (Mercy to the Worlds).[5] Some, such as al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi, consider this ruling to apply to the polytheists of Mecca as well,[6] while Abd Allah Jawadi Amuli interprets Istighfar as their conversion to Islam.[7] Furthermore, based on a narration from Imam al-Sadiq (a) cited in Tafsir al-Burhan, the Prophet's seeking forgiveness for the Umma continues even after his demise.[8]
