Verse 33 of Sura al-Anfal (Arabic: الآية 33 من سورة الأنفال) (Qur'an 8:33) states that God has removed the annihilating punishment (ʿadhāb al-istiʾṣāl) from the Islamic umma due to the presence of Prophet Muhammad (s) among the people and their Istighfar.[1]
This verse was revealed in response to the request of the polytheists of Mecca for Divine punishment. They said that if the Qur'an is the truth, let a punishment descend upon us from the sky.[2]
Exegetes have interpreted the "punishment" in this verse as the Punishment of Isti'sal (collective punishment).[3][4] Therefore, according to Allama Tabataba'i, the verse negates the punishment from the entire ummah and does not contradict the punishment of specific individuals such as Abu Lahab.[5]
Exegetes consider the negation of punishment from the Ummah as a manifestation of the Prophet (s) being Rahmatun li-l-Alamin (Mercy to the Worlds).[6] Some, like al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi, consider this ruling to include the polytheists of Mecca as well,[7] while Abd Allah Jawadi Amuli interpreted Istighfar as their conversion to Islam.[8] Also, based on a narration from Imam al-Sadiq (a) cited in Tafsir al-Burhan, the Prophet's (s) seeking forgiveness for the ummah continues after his demise.[9]
