Zarud
Zarūd (Arabic: زَرود) is one of the layover stations on the route between Mecca and Kufa. In the Event of Karbala, Imam al-Husayn (a) stopped there after Khuzaymiyya and then headed towards Tha'labiyya.
Location and Etymology
Zarud was a sandy area between the layover stations of Khuzaymiyya and Tha'labiyya on the way from Mecca to Kufa. The sandy nature of this areas allows it to absorb alot of rainwater and it is for this reason that it was called Zarud, meaning "swallower". This place was also a suitable location for Hajj caravans coming from Baghdad.[1]
Events
In this station, Imam al-Husayn (a) met Zuhayr b. Qayn al-Bajali and called him to his aid. He accepted and joined the Imam's caravan.[2]
It was at this station or near it that Imam al-Husayn (a) received the news of the martyrdom of Muslim b. 'Aqil and Hani b. 'Urwa from a man of the Banu Asad tribe. They informed the Imam about the situation in Kufa and warned him against going to Kufa.[3] According to some sources, the news of the martyrdom of Muslim and Hani reached Imam al-Husayn (a) in the station of Tha'labiyya,[4] al-Qadisiyya[5] or Qutqutana.[6]
'Abd Allah b. Sulayman and Mundhir b. Mushma'ill reached the Imam's caravan at this station and accompanied him up to Tha'labiyya. According to what has been mentioned in al-Irshad by al-Shaykh al-Mufid, it was these two individuals that heard the news of the killing of Muslim and Hani in Zarud and conveyed it to the Imam in Tha'labiyya.[7]
