Ghadīr Khumm Mosque (Arabic: مسجد غدير خم) is a mosque between Mecca and Medina in the location of Ghadir Khumm. According to historical reports, this mosque was built in the location where the Prophet (s) made the famous speech of Ghadir and told the people about the wilaya of Imam Ali (a).
This mosque was located about 5 km away from Juhfa region, but today there is nothing remained of it, thus there are different opinions regarding its precise location. According to Muhammad b. Makki (al-Shahid al-Awwal d. 786/1384-5), walls of this mosque were still remaining at his time.
In narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (a), this mosque has been mentioned and performing prayers was recommended there.
History and Geographical Location
About its location, some have generally mentioned that the mosque was built in a place where the Prophet (s) stood, prayed and introduced Imam Ali (a) as the caliph after himself on the way back from Hajjat al-Wida'. Some have also mentioned some details about its geographical details such as in Mu'jam ma ista'jam, where al-Bakri has mentioned its location between Ghadir and the water spring. Also in Mu'jam al-buldan, Yaqut al-Himawi has mentioned, "Khumm is a place where there is a water spring and between Ghadir and the spring, there is a mosque."
It has been mentioned that the building of the mosque was ruined after a flood during Ottoman rule. Also in both of his books, al-Shahid al-Awwal has mentioned about the building of the mosque that, "its walls have remained until now, and it is a famous mosque and usually the way of hajj pilgrims passed that way."
Merits and Recommended Practices
Based on narrations, Shia scholars in hadith and fiqh have mentioned the mosque of Ghadir and the recommendation of performing prayer and reciting supplication there. In this regard, Kashif al-Ghita' (d. 1227/1812-3) said, "Imam Musa al-Kazim (a) said, 'pray there because it has rewards and my father recommended to it.' And Imam al-Sadiq (a) said, 'performing prayer in Ghadir mosque is recommended because the noble Prophet (s) introduced Imam Ali (a) as his caliph there and demonstrated the truth.' And the left side of the mosque is better because when Imam al-Sadiq (a) looked at the left side of the mosque, he (a) said, ' the placethis is the Prophet (s) stood.'"
Among Shia hadith references, in al-Kafi, al-Kulayni has dedicated an independent part to Ghadir mosque and related narrations including the one narrated by 'Abd al-Rahman b. Hajjaj who said that, "… I asked Musa b. Ja'far (a) about the virtue of performing prayer in the mosque of Ghadir Khum. He (a) replied, 'perform prayer there because there are great rewards for it and my father always recommended it.'"
Al-Shaykh al-Tusi, Ibn Hamza, Ibn Idris, al-'Allama al-Hilli, Hurr al-'Amili, al-Shaykh Yusuf al-Bahrani and the author of Jawahir (Sahib Jawahir) have mentioned about the mosque of Ghadir in their works and have considered the prayer (two rak'as) there recommended and having great rewards.
