TopicExpressing the regret of the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection

Qur'an 4:42 refers to the consequence of the actions of the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection and the peak of their regret. They wish that they were leveled with the earth,[1] because the presence of numerous witnesses eliminates the possibility of concealment from God.[2]

According to 'Allama Tabataba'i, a Qur'an exegete, the disobedience mentioned in this verse ("'asaw") refers to defying the wilaya-based commands of the Prophet (s), not disobeying the Shari'a rulings of God.[3] Exegetes also consider the words of the disbelievers who said, "we wish the earth were leveled with us," to be an allegory.[4] However, regarding what it is an allegory for, several possibilities exist:

  • They wish they had never been born and had remained as earth (similar to Qur'an 78:40).[5]
  • They wish that after death and becoming dust, they would not be resurrected or brought back to life.[6]
  • They wish their graves were not even identified and they were forgotten.[7]
  • They wish they were crushed under the feet of people and leveled with the ground.[8]
  • They wish they had sunk into the earth.[9]

Although it is stated in other verses of the Qur'an (verses 22 and 23 of Sura al-An'am and verse 18 of Sura al-Mujadila) that the disbelievers conceal the truths on the Day of Resurrection, according to Nasir Makarem Shirazi, a Qur'an exegete, these verses are not inconsistent with each other. This is because their lying occurs before the testimony of the witnesses of actions, while this verse describes their state after the testimony of the witnesses.[10]

In Sunni narrations, this verse is considered to be related to the Jewish people, but in 'Allama Tabataba'i's view, this verse is general and includes all disbelievers.[11] In Tafsir al-Qummi, this verse is also applied to the usurpers of the right of Imam 'Ali (a), such that they wish they had not concealed the words of the Prophet (s) regarding Imam 'Ali (a).[12]
