Jawāhirī Mosque (Arabic: جامِعُ الْجَواهری) or Āl Jawāhirī Mosque is one of the famous mosques in Najaf. It is located in the al-Amara neighborhood[1] near the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali (a) and the al-Shaykh Tusi Mosque.[2]

The mosque is famous as "Jawahiri" because Shaykh Muḥammad Ḥasan al-Najafi (d. 1266/1850), known as "Sahib al-Jawahir" (the Author of al-Jawahir), is buried there.[3] This mosque is considered one of the important centers for education and discussion (mubaḥatha) for students of the Najaf Seminary.[4]

This mosque was renovated and expanded by Shaykh Jawad Jawahiri, a grandson of Muhammad Hasan al-Najafi.[6] Also, al-Shaykh Muhammad Taqi al-Jawahiri (another grandson of Ṣaḥib al-Jawahir) was the Imam of the mosque who was arrested by the Ba'athist regime of Iraq and was martyred in 1980.[7]

According to reports, the funeral procession of Sayyid Mustafa Khomeini began from this mosque towards the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali (a).[8]

It is also narrated that on the night of February 11, 1979 (13 Rabiwal Awwal 1399), Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr ascended the minbar in Jawahiri Mosque and spoke about the Islamic Revolution of Iran, the role of Imam Khomeini in the victory of this revolution, the reform of the Islamic Ummah, and the duty of the people of Iraq to rise against the government.[9] It is said that the next day, people held demonstrations in various cities of Iraq.[10]
