List of the Companions of Imam al-Jawad (a) are people referred to in Shiite sources as transmitters, companions, and deputies of Imam al-Jawad (a), the ninth Imam of the Shiite. According to sources, his companions are said to be 117 to 276.

Number

There are different views of the number of companions, transmitters of hadiths, and students of Imam al-Jawad (a): in his Rijal, al-Shaykh al-Tusi mentions 117 people as “Ashab Jawad al-A'imma.”[1] In his Musnad al-Imam al-Jawad, Atarudi believes that 121 people transmitted hadiths from the Ninth Imam.[2] The number of Ashab al-Imam al-Jawad is said to be 132[3] by al-Qarashi in his Hayat al-Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (a), 193[4] by Abd al-Husayn al-Shabistari in his Subul al-rashad ila ashab al-Imam al-Jawad (a), and 276 by Sayyid Muhammad Kazim al-Qazwini in his al-Imam al-Jawad min al-mahd ila al-lahd. Some companions of Imam al-Jawad were also companions of Imam al-Rida (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a), and transmitted hadiths from them as well.[5].

  1. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr al-Bazanti; (b.152/769-70 - d.221/835-6), one of the early Imami scholars in Kufa, and a companion of Imam al-Kazim (a), Imam al-Rida (a), and Imam al-Jawad (a).
  2. Al-Hasan b. Mahbub; (d. 224/838-9), was a companion of Imam al-Kazim (a), Imam al-Rida (a), and Imam al-Jawad (a). He is one of the great figures in hadith and fiqh. His name appears in the chains of transmission of many hadiths in the Four Books.
  3. Muhammad b. Abi 'Umayr; (d. 217/832-3) known as Ibn Abī Umayr was a grand Twelver hadith narrator. His mursal narrations are accepted similar to his musnad narrations by most of rijal scholars.
  4. Safwan b. Yahya al-Bajali; a companion of Imam al-Kazim (a), a deputy of Imam al-Rida (a), and Imam al-Jawad (a).
  5. Hammad b. 'Isa al-Juhani; (d. 209/824-5) a companion of Imam al-Sadiq (a), Imam al-Kazim (a), Imam al-Rida (a), and Imam al-Jawad (a). More than 1,500 hadiths are quoted from Hammad in Shi'a hadith sources.

  1. Ibrahim b. Hashim al-Qummi; a Shi'a jurist (faqih) and narrator (muhaddith) who spread the hadith of Kufa school of narration in Qom. He is the father of 'Ali b. Ibrahim (whose exegesis is very famous).
  2. 'Abd al-'Azim al-Hasani; among the famous scholars of the progeny of Imam al-Hasan (a) and a transmitter of hadith.
  3. Muhammad b. al-Rayyan b. al-Salt; (alive in 254/868) was a prominent Shi'a scholar and narrator of hadiths in the 3rd/9th century. He was a companion of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a).
  4. Al-Husayn b. Sa'id al-Ahwazi; a companion of Imam al-Rida (a), Imam al-Jawad (a), and Imam al-Hadi (a). He was a jurist and Muhaddith, together with his brother al-Hasan, composed important jurisprudential and hadith works.
  5. 'Ali b. Mahziyar al-Ahwazi; was among close companions of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a) and was their agents in some regions.
  6. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. 'Isa al-Ash'ari; a great muhaddith of the 3rd/9th century and one of the disciples of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a). He was, according to al-Shaykh al-Tusi, "the Shaykh of the people of Qom, their noble, and their faqih.

  1. Ibn Abi al-Khattab; (d. 262/875-6), known as Ibn Abī l-Khaṭṭāb, was an Iranian Shi'a muhddith and a companion of Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), and Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari.
  2. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid al-Barqi; (b. ~200/815-6 - d.274/887-8 or 280/893-4) was a renowned Twelver Shi'a muhaddith (hadith scholar) and historian of 3rd/9th century. Both Shi'a and Sunni scholars have relied on his hadiths. His most important work is al-Mahasin.
  3. Ibrahim b. Mahziyar; one of the Shi'a hadith narrators in the 3/9 centuries. He was the famous companion of Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), and Imam al-'Askari (a).
  4. Ibn al-Sikkit; (b. 186/802 d. 244/858) is a Iranian Shi'a Muhaddith and a great figure in Arabic lexicology and syntax. He was one of the close companions of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a).
  5. Sahl b. Ziyad al-Adami; (Alive in 255/868-9) is a Shi'a hadith narrator who has narrated a lot of hadiths. He was expelled from Qom accused of Ghuluww. He is among the companions of Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), and Imam al-'Askari (a).
  6. Ahmad b. Ishaq al-Ash'ari al-Qummi; (d. between 260/873-4 and 263/876-7) was a Shi'a scholar in hadith and fiqh in 3rd century AH and met four Imams (a). He was among the companions of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a) and an agent of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari (a) and also among those who saw Imam al-Mahdi (a) in childhood.
  7. Zakariyya b. Adam al-Ash'ari al-Qummi; an Imami muhaddith in the 2nd/8th and 3rd/9th centuries and a representative of Imam al-Rida (a) and Imam al-Jawad (a) in Qom.
  8. Khayran al-Khadim; a Shi'a transmitter of hadith in 2nd/8th and 3rd/9th centuries who was a servant of Imam al-Rida (a) and deputy of Imam al-Jawad (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a). Great scholars such as al-Shaykh al-Tusi have mentioned him as reliable.
  9. Dawud b. al-Qasim b. Ishaq; known as Abū Hāshim al-Ja'farī and Dāwūd b. al-Qāsim al-Jaʿfarī (d. 261/875) was a companion of four Shiite Imams (a): Imam al-Rida (a), Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), and Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari (a).
  10. Rayyan b. Shabib; a the companion of Imam al-Rida (a) and Imam al-Jawad (a).
  11. 'Uthman b. Sa'id; the first deputy of Imam al-Mahdi (a). He was a companion of Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari (a) and Imam al-Mahdi (a). When the imamate of Imam al-Mahdi (a) began, he was appointed by him as his special deputy.
  12. 'Ali b. Imam al-Sadiq (a); He is counted the youngest child of Imam al-Sadiq (a) who also experienced the Imam al-Hadi's period.
