Abū Jaʿfar, Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Abī l-Khaṭṭāb Zayd Zayyāt al-Ḥamdanī al-Kūfī(Arabic: ابوجعفر، محمد بن الحسین بن ابي الخطاب زید الزیّات الهمداني الکوفي) (d. 262/875-6), known as Ibn Abī l-Khaṭṭāb (إِبْن أَبي الخَطّاب), was an Iranian Shi'a muhddith.

Name and Family

He was a descendant of 'Abd al-'Aziz b. al-Muhtadi b. Muhammad b. 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Ash'ari al-Qummi.

Al-Kulayni mentioned his name in various points of al-Kafi as Muhammd b. al-Husayn. Also, Ibn Qulawayh mentioned his name as Muhammd b. al-Husayn b. Abi l-Khattab.[1]

Al-Najashi mentioned his name, title, nickname, his father's name and his lineage as follows: "Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Abi l-Khattab Abu Ja'far al-Zayyat al-Hamdani".[2]

Also, al-Hilli mentioned his name like al-Najashi did, except that he –apparently by mistake- mentioned "Abi l-Husayn" instead of "al-Husayn";[3] but what the majority of early and later authors has emphasized is al-Njashi's statement.

Reliability

Al-Najashi believes that his narrations are authentic and says: "he was a reliable, prominent and elite Shi'a narrator. He narrated many hadiths and wrote nice books."[4]

Companionship of Three Imams (a)

According to Mamaqani, he was a companion of three Imams i.e. Imam al-Jawad (a), Imam al-Hadi (a), and Imam al-'Askari (a). His chain of narrators reaches previous Imams to Imam 'Ali (a) by three to six persons.[5]

Lifespan

Considering his numerous narrations and experiencing three Imams (a), some sources counted him as an aged narrator of his time.[6] Aqa Buzurg Tihrani believed that he lived about 100 years.[7]
