Qāsim b. Ḥabīb al-Azdī (Arabic: قاسم بن حبيب الأزدي) is one of the martyrs of Karbala. In his book al-Rijal, al-Shaykh al-Tusi attests that Qasim ibn Habib al-Azdi was a companion of Imam al-Husayn (a).[1] Muhammad al-Samawi, in his book Ibsar al-'ayn, introduces Qasim as one of the Shi'a warriors from Kufa.[2] Al-Samawi notes that Qasim embarked towards Karbala with Umar b. Sa'd but subsequently joined Imam Husayn (a) army upon arrival and remained by his side until he met martyrdom during the initial assault on the Day of Ashura.[3]

Qasim's allegiance to Imam Husayn (a) is believed to have taken place on the fifth or sixth of Muharram.[4] It is noteworthy that Qasim's age at the time of martyrdom is reported as forty years.[5] He is greeted in the Ziyara al-Shuhada'[6] and Ziyara al-Rajabiyya[7] for Imam al-Husayn (a) with this phrase:

"Peace be upon Qasim b. Habib al-Azdi."

Qasim was a member of the Azd tribe.[8] The Ziyara al-Rajabiyya[9] refers to a person by the name of Qasim b. Harith al-Kahili, who is believed to be the same individual as Qasim b. Habib.[10] Additionally, the Tasmiya man qutil ma'a l-Husayn (written in the second/eighth century) mentions Qasim b. Bushr as one of the martyrs of Karbala,[11] who is said to be identical to Qasim b. Habib.[12] Qasim b. Bashir is another name by which he is referred to.[13]
