Abū Bakr b. Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (a) (martyrdom: 'Ashura 61/680) was among the children of Imam al-Hasan (a) who was martyred after his brother, al-Qasim, by 'Abd Allah b. 'Uqba al-Ghanawi.

Name and Lineage

Abu Bakr was son of Imam Hasan b. Ali (a) and his mother was a bondswoman.[1] Some believe that he and Qasim b. al-Hasan were from one mother[2] who is mentioned as Ramla.[3] He was martyred on the day of 'Ashura together with his brothers 'Abd Allah and Qasim.[4]

In some sources, there is a mistake and he has been mentioned as Abu Bakr b. al-Husayn.[5]

The Battle of Karbala

On the day of 'Ashura, Abu Bakr was martyred after his brother Qasim b. al-Hasan[6] by an arrow shot by 'Abd Allah b. 'Uqba al-Ghanawi.[7] His name is mentioned in Ziyarah al-Nahiya al-Muqaddasa (non-famous) and Ziyara Rajabiyya and in Ziyarah of al-Nahiya al-Muqaddasa, his murderer has been cursed.[8] The poems of Sulayman b. Qatah elegizing for the martyrs of Karbala mentions the martyrdom of one of the companions of Imam al-Husayn (a) by a person from Ghanawi tribe which is probably referring to the story of Abu Bakr b. Hasan who was martyred by 'Abd Allah b. 'Aqaba:

"In the tribe of Ghani, there is a blood of us and one day we will take revenge from them."[9]

However, in some sources, Harmala b. Kahil al-Asadi has been introduced as his murderer.[10]
