Zuhayr b. Sulaym al-Azdī (Arabic: زهير بن سليم الأزدي) was among the martyrs of Karbala on the Day of Ashura in the year 61/680.[1] He is also reported to have been a companion of Imam Ali (a).[2]

According to al-Mamaqani (d. 1351/1933) in Tanqih al-maqal, historians have documented that Zuhayr initially arrived in Karbala alongside the army of Umar b. Sa'd. However, upon learning of Umar b. Sa'd's decision to kill Imam al-Husayn (a), he chose to align himself with the Imam (a) and subsequently met martyrdom on the Day of Ashura after the initial attack.[3] This account is cited in the book Ibsar al-'ayn by Muhammad al-Samawi (d. 1371/1950).[4] In the Ziyara al-Shuhada', Zuhayr b. Sulaym al-Azdi is honored with the phrase "peace be upon Zuhayr b. Sulaym al-Azdi."[5]

Zuhayr was notably present in the Battle of Qadisiyya, during which he is reported to have slain a commander of the Iranian army known as Nakhar Jan or Nakhir Khan.[6]

Zuhayr was the brother of Mikhnaf b. Sulaym al-Azdi, who was a companion of the Prophet (s) as well as a commander in the army of Imam Ali (a).[7]

In historical sources, a figure named 'Abd Allah b. Zuhayr b. Sulaym is mentioned as a commander in Umar Sa'd's army during the event of Karbala.[8] It is believed that he is the son of Zuhayr.[9]
