The House of al-Arqam b. Abi l-Arqam was the location where the Prophet of Islam, at the beginning of the invitation to Islam, invited people to the religion of Islam and taught the Muslims.[1] Muslims would attend this house secretly and worship God[2] until their number reached forty, after which they made their religion public.[3] This house was located in Mecca, near Mount Safa[4] and, due to its role at the beginning of the invitation, was called "Dar al-Islam".[5] Events of the Meccan period in books of sira are usually organized with reference to whether they occurred before or after this house.[6]
al-Arqam later endowed his house as a waqf so that its sale or purchase would not be possible.[7] Even his children paid rent to reside there.[8] Eventually, al-Mansur al-Abbasi forced the children of al-Arqam to sell the house and gave it as a gift to his son al-Mahdi al-Abbasi.[9] Mahdi then gave the house to his wife Khayzuran,[10] and Khayzuran built a mosque in it;[11] hence, it was called "Dar al-Khayzuran" for a while.[12] In 1375 AH, during an expansion ordered by Sa'ud b. 'Abd al-'Aziz, the house was incorporated into al-Masjid al-Haram.[13]
al-Arqam b. Abi l-Arqam was a companion of the Prophet and, according to one report, the seventh Muslim.[14] He participated in the Battle of Badr, Battle of Uhud, and other battles[15] and passed away in Medina during the time of Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan.[16]
