Qur'an 29:20 points to God's power in recreating creatures after their destruction[1] and considers it a reason for the existence of the Resurrection and Return and a sign of God's endless greatness and power.[2] According to Makarim Shirazi, Qur'an 29:19 and 20 of Sura al-'Ankabut are both about the possibility of the Resurrection. In these verses, by emphasizing God's vast power in the creation of creatures and examining past nations, the possibility of Resurrection is shown.[3] Fakhr al-Razi, a Sunni exegete, also like Shi'a exegetes says that by observing God's power in the initial creation of creatures, the possibility of reviving them once again is clearly evident, and these observations prove God's power and the existence of the Resurrection.[4]

According to Shi'a and Sunni exegetes, in this verse, the command to travel at the beginning of the verse means the command to contemplate and think.[5] God addresses the Prophet (a) to tell the polytheists and deniers of the Resurrection to take a lesson by observing and contemplating the creation of creatures and their revival,[6] so that by understanding how they were created and the diversity of their colors and shapes, they may believe in God's power.[7] Abu l-Futuh al-Razi, a Shi'a exegete, also believes that God, by addressing the Prophet (a), wants to tell the polytheists to think and take a lesson about them by traveling the earth and observing the remains left from past nations.[8]
Muhammad Jawad Mughniyya, a Shi'a exegete, has also explained that this command is to study the conditions of the predecessors to counter imitation and prove monotheism and the Resurrection, and considers it a kind of recommendation for acquiring knowledge.[9] According to Makarim Shirazi, God in the Qur'an has recommended traveling and touring the earth in numerous verses to learn a lesson from the predecessors, and in all these verses the phrase "sīrū fī l-arḍ" (travel over the land) is mentioned. Among these verses, one can refer to Qur'an 30:42, Qur'an 6:11, Qur'an 27:69, Qur'an 16:36, and Qur'an 3:137.[10]
